Strolling Through the Park
Starting on November 1, Venezuela kicks off the Christmas season; little by little, public spaces will light up with the glow of the holiday season, and joy will fill the streets in every corner of the country. But at the same time, this season calls for reflection, and it is with that in mind that I head out today to wander among thoughts and photographs. My destination will be one of the city’s best-known parks and, at the same time, one of the closest to my home; this is how I arrive at Parque del Oeste, a place that not only has a history of its own but has also become the natural “lung” of the western part of the capital.

Paseando por el Parque
Desde el primero de noviembre, Venezuela le da inicio a la Navidad; poco a poco los espacios públicos se iluminarán con el brillo de la época decembrina y la alegría plagará las calles de cada rincón del país. Pero al mismo tiempo, esta época llama a la reflexión y es bajo esa premisa con la que salgo el día de hoy a divagar entre pensamientos y fotografías. Mi destino será uno de los parques más conocidos de la ciudad y al mismo tiempo uno de los más cercanos a mi domicilio; es así como llego al Parque del Oeste, un lugar que no solo tiene una historia propia, sino que se ha convertido en el pulmón natural del occidente capitalino.

I understand that in the beginning, these spaces were not conceived as a park in the full sense of the word, but rather originally comprised the campus and gardens of the teachers’ college, an institution that would close its doors in the last century, but whose grounds, fortunately, were not handed over to the real estate industry; on the contrary, someone decided they should be opened to the public as an urban park—and this is truly a decision we’ve come to deeply appreciate over the years, as it resulted in one of the city’s most incredible spaces.
Tengo entendido que en sus inicios estos espacios no fueron concebidos como un parque en todo el sentido de la palabra, sino que originalmente conformaban el campus y los jardines de la escuela normalista, una institución que cerraría sus puertas en el siglo pasado, pero cuyos terrenos afortunadamente no fueron cedidos al aparato inmobiliario, sino que, por el contrario, a alguien se le ocurrió que debían ser abiertos al pueblo, bajo la figura de un parque urbano y realmente esta es una decisión que se agradece profundamente con el pasar de los años, ya que dio como resultado uno de los espacios más increíbles de la ciudad.
Caracas has the unique quality of having parks that look like they’re straight out of a fairy tale. In a matter of seconds, one of the capital’s busiest and most bustling avenues fades into the distance, and we find ourselves in a world dominated by small hills, forests, trails, and lakes—all part of a meticulously designed landscape where we not only feel the tranquility of nature but also experience the energy of hiking and the comfort of a garden.
Caracas tiene esa cualidad de contar con parques que parecieran sacados de un cuento de hadas. En cuestión de segundos queda atrás una de las avenidas más bulliciosas y concurridas de la capital, para luego encontrarnos en un mundo dominado por pequeñas colinas, bosques, senderos y lagos, todo bajo un concepto paisajístico muy bien trabajado, en donde no solo sentimos la tranquilidad de la naturaleza, sino que nos conseguimos con el dinamismo del senderismo y la comodidad de un jardín.
Walking here is always a pleasant experience; the dry leaves on the ground along the path create an indescribable crunching sound, the ever-present mountain breeze spoils us with Caribbean freshness, and the birdsong creates a melody capable of immersing us in a state of absolute relaxation—leaving our problems and difficulties behind to make way for a few minutes where tranquility makes all the difference and inner peace floods the soul.
Caminar por acá siempre constituye una experiencia agradable; las hojas secas de los árboles en medio del camino nos regalan un chasquido indescriptible, la brisa perenne de la montaña nos consiente con una frescura caribeña y el cantar de las aves representa una melodía capaz de sumergirnos en un estado de relajación absoluta, con lo cual los problemas y las dificultades quedan atrás, para así darle paso a unos minutos en donde la tranquilidad marca la diferencia y la paz interior inunda el alma.
This year has been quite challenging for all Venezuelans; I think it has been one of the most unusual years of my 33 years of life and, as a result, one of the most challenging. Count the days that have passed, and we’re already on the cusp of 2027, which will surely be a little better.
Este año para todos los venezolanos ha sido bastante complejo; creo que mis 33 años de vida ha sido uno de los más peculiares y, por lo tanto, es uno de los que más retos nos ha impuesto. Cuenta los días que han pasado y ya estamos a las puertas de un 2027 que seguramente será un tanto mejor.
I believe that going out for a walk—with no set destination, without rushing, and with the freedom to wander wherever I please, taking photos and enjoying the atmosphere—has been one of the most positive mental and physical exercises in my routine, as it has allowed me to let go of worries, organize my thoughts, and propel my future forward—a future in which I always strive for collective success, peace, and tranquility.
Creo que salir a pasear, sin un destino definido, sin apuros y con la libertad de caminar por doquier, tomando fotografías y disfrutando del ambiente, ha sido uno de los ejercicios mentales y físicos más positivos que incluye mi rutina, ya que esto me ha permitido drenar preocupaciones, organizar mis ideas e impulsar mi futuro, uno en donde siempre busco el éxito colectivo, la paz y la tranquilidad.
On every walk, I try to live in the moment as best I can; perhaps we’re talking about something simple—a detail that goes unnoticed over time—but it’s really about small doses of relief for a modern life that’s complicated and hectic, where minutes pass faster and faster and days fly by in the blink of an eye.
En cada caminata intento vivir el momento de la mejor manera posible; quizás estemos hablando de algo sencillo, un detalle que pasa desapercibido con el tiempo, pero realmente se trata de pequeñas dosis analgésicas para una vida moderna que es complicada y agitada, en donde los minutos pasan cada vez más rápido y los días se van en un parpadeo.
Rediscovering my city while connecting with the nature around me is like taking a journey to an idyllic world, a parallel reality, as I imagine myself walking through a world without complications, where the economy isn’t a problem and where life is truly happy.
Reencontrarme con mi ciudad y al mismo tiempo conectarme con la naturaleza que me rodea es como dar un viaje hacia un mundo idílico, una realidad paralela, puesto que me imagino estar caminando por un mundo sin complicaciones, en donde la economía no es un problema y en donde la vida es plenamente feliz.
As you can all see from my photos, this is a beautiful park—a place well worth visiting—and I invite everyone who wants to visit my city to come see it. But I also want to wish you all a happy start to the Christmas season; I hope the remaining days of 2026 are productive and joyful for everyone. Little by little, the Wednesdays of this year are coming to an end, so let’s take this opportunity to go out, take a walk, and enjoy life—starting with the simple things, but focusing on the beautiful ones.
Como todos pueden ver a través de mis imágenes, este es un parque bello, un lugar que vale la pena conocer y al cual invito a todos los que deseen visitar mi ciudad. Pero también quiero desearles un feliz inicio de la Navidad; espero que estos días que quedan del año 2026 sean productivos y felices para todos. Poco a poco se van acabando los miércoles de este año, así que aprovechemos para salir, pasear y disfrutar de la vida, desde lo sencillo, pero desde lo bonito.
