Greetings, dear community! Last Christmas, I was commissioned to make an amigurumi nativity scene, and—anticipating the holiday season—I’ve already received my first order for one. However, one of the things I love most about the art of crochet is that I never stop learning and improving; looking back at my previous nativity sets, I felt I needed to tweak the design, so I decided to create a new version. As I mentioned in earlier posts, I had already started a miniature version, but this new one will be larger. I decided to begin with the simplest element to give my hand a bit of a rest before tackling the figures themselves. I made the mat that will serve as the base for the Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus, and Saint Joseph; I used the same colors but adjusted the number of stitches and rows, and I absolutely love the result. I’m sharing the process here in case you’d like to replicate it or find other uses for it, as it’s a versatile mat that works well for many things. 😊
Proceso / Process
For this project, I used acrylic yarn and a 1.25mm crochet hook. I started with the orange color by working 16 double crochets into a ring; I made 8 increases over 3 rounds to reach 40 stitches, then made 10 increases over 5 rounds to reach 90.
I switched to ochre-colored yarn and worked a row with 10 increases to reach 100 stitches, then worked a row of shells by repeating: 1 slip stitch, skip 1 stitch, 6 double crochets in the same stitch, skip 1 stitch.
Using wheat-colored or gold yarn and working only into the back loops of the stitches, I repeated: 4 slip stitches, 2 chain stitches, 3 slip stitches. Then, using the same-colored yarn, I worked along the color-change row, creating a row of slip stitches while carrying the yarn strand behind the work.
