I'm excited that, thanks to the dedication of my kids' school's parent volunteers, staff and community members, six garden beds for the school have been assembled!
The volunteers have three steps left:
- Finalizing the arrangement of beds in the space
- Preparing the beds for soil
- Filling them with soil and initial planting for over the summer.
I'm excited to plant pumpkins over the summer so the kids can have pumpkins in the fall!
We haven't firmly decided on the beds' orientation in the space yet. I'm expecting they should meet all these criteria:
They should all be comfortably accessible. I think this means that there should be at least 3 feet between them and any walls.
There should be space on all sides of each bed so that a class can gather around it.
Probably unnecessary because the two above already adequately address it, but there should be easily navigable paths throughout the space.
There should be an open space centrally that students or others could gather for a lesson or event.
Paying attention to where light falls, beds should catch as much light as they can. This means keeping them some distance from walls and paying attention to the shadow of the tree that's nearby.
