What an Inheritance! You are richer than you thought.
The man sitting behind the desk looked very dour when he said this to me,
What do you mean I asked?
He sighed, took a swig of his whisky and then picked up the paper in front of him.
His glasses rested at the tip of his nose. He peered over the top of them at me and then into the distance, I could see his eyes were not focused on me and started to feel a little uncomfortable at his disengagement.
Well, he said, it would appear that your Uncle has decided to leave his property in the back waters of Jindup to you and your first born son.
In the event that anything should happen to you the Inheritance will go to.
At this point his sighs became very disturbing and he could not hide his disdain.
Andrew, he said.
He almost spat the name out and the he sneezed as if the very name caused an allergy, he blew his nose very loudly and continued.
Look he said, you are not young yourself and, is there really no other child but Andrew,I have read about his exploits and they are far from favorable.
I am sure that if he were to get hold of this property he would squander it at the blink of an eye.
Well I was not impressed at this man’s judgement of my son. He was right. But that was not for him to say. After all I was his father and even though I knew Andrew was a lost cause I also knew that he was of my own stock and I couldn’t help feel that I was somewhat similar.
(5 minutes end)
In One Day!! I asked, I could not believe his luck.
Andrew had just come into the living room and explained that he had just landed the deal of a lifetime and he had suddenly come into a windfall that would see him right for the rest of his days.
He had come to tell me this as he also did not want anything more to do with me.
I have had enough of your trying to sort me out father, he said. I no longer want you to feel responsible for me and I am going to go to do my thing and I hope to never to be seen again.
I was starting to think that this was my extra special lucky day. I was feeling the wealthiest I had ever been, finally getting the monkey off my back and seeing Andrew for possibly the last time.
Things couldn’t have worked out better for me. Not only had I just been informed the day before that I had inherited a property but also now the one person that could have gotten in my way was about to leave for good.
Never to be seen again he said, oh what a joy this past couple of days had been, all anguish seemed to lift from my shoulders and I was finally feeling that freedom was coming my way
(end 5 minutes)
Are you pleased father that you will not see me again.
Does it make you feel safe now??
I must admit I also started to feel guilty that I was feeling this way, after all Andrew was my only son and I had lost my wife quite some years ago. Even though Andrew had been a burden he was also a relief,
I knew that one day Andrew would get his act together and make something of himself, I was not aware that this day had come, and I certainly was not expecting him to ‘Never Be Seen Again’ those were his words and they were joyous to hear.
Andrew looked at me and at that moment I saw the loathing in his eyes,
Then suddenly Andrew threw the Glass he had in his hands, I saw it come towards me in slow motion, I tried to move out of the way but it struck me in the head and exploded into a million pieces as it struck my temple, I fell, bleeding and struggled to breath next to me laid my broken glasses, I was struggling to see, but I saw Andrew walk towards me.
Andrew stood over me and pulled out a piece of paper, I could just make out the words Jindup as I took my last breath.
In the distance I heard Andrew say
If something should happen to you, and then all went black.
I would never see Andrew again
