Infantile hemangiomas are the most common benign vascular tumors of infancy, characterized by proliferation of the endothelial cells that line blood vessels. These lesions are mostly cutaneous and known as “strawberry” birthmarks and are first noticed a few days to weeks after birth. They tend to increase in size (sometimes becoming quite large) and gradually resolve and undergo regression or involution, which can take as long as 3-10 years. Nearly all flat infantile hemangiomas eventually involute and disappear without treatment. However, regression of bulky hemangiomas tends to be incomplete, and they may leave an irregular atrophic (thin) scar or anetoderma (a dented scar) in at least 50% of cases.
The best treatment is to do nothing but observe and follow.
If they do get large, surgical excision can be done.
