Who is Miss Racheal?” I heard the doctor said as he walked down to the reception where I sat down.
“I am Racheal sir,” I replied whilst trying to figure out what his facial expression said.
“Hello Miss Racheal, I am Doctor Paul, the doctor in charge of your sister”. He said calmly.
“Hello sir, can I please go in and see my sister now?” I said happily.
“Hold on Miss,” he said, taking a step closer to prevent me from going into the ward.
“Why? Is there a problem sir?” I said alarmed this time.
The doctor took a few minutes to compose himself before saying those strong sad words that were going to change my life forever
“The twins are hale and hearty but we lost Josephine, while struggling for her life she was bleeding nonstop and we lost her-“
Not letting the doctor finish his rehearsed statement he usually recited to family and guardians of his patients, I let out a loud scream.
“This has to be a dream, I said, touching my face and body whilst pacing to confirm if I was in a dreamland.
Without any warning I ran at the speed of light to the ward where my sister was, I removed the white clothes they used to cover her, and I held her tight, I shook her several times
“Wake up Jojo” I shouted.
“Wake up this instant Jojo” I used my hands to open her eyes but they couldn’t stay open on their own.
I refused to believe that my sister had gone to the great beyond and the fact that she didn't wake up to give me a serious warning for screaming and calling her Jojo shattered my heart.
“I’ll miss you, sis,” I said amidst tears.
“Josephine this was not the plan, we made a promise to always stay by each other's side, who are you leaving the responsibility for? Who will take care of your little boys? Who will stay by George’s side?”
With every word that came out of my mouth, a fresh set of tears made their way to my eyes and the lump in my throat grew bigger and painful to swallow.
“Ohhhh God!!!, Josephine why!!!! Why!!, I will miss you, sis, I’m sorry for being a pain in the ass, I’m sorry for disrespecting you, just come back and I promise to change”. I shook my sister tirelessly but she never responded.
The nurses came to roll my sister out of the ward.
“I’m sorry miss but we need to take the deceased to the morgue” the nurse struggled to say those words.
“No!!!!!! No!!!, she's not going to the morgue she is going home, and don't call her deceased!!!” I was hysterical.
Without any warning, I pushed the nurse who was about to roll my sister away and held the bed tight.
“Josephine enough of the prank, you win, can you wake up now“ I said to my sister expecting a reply as she always loved to win.
“Josephine they are about to take you to the morgue!!” I yelled at my sister.
“Josephine!!, Josephine!! Why are you doing this? why? “ I said before placing my head on the rails of the bed and started sobbing.
A middle-aged nurse pulled me into a tight hug, while the rest covered my sister with the white cloth from earlier and rolled her away.
I was too tired to protest again as my sister was gone and there was nothing anyone could do.
“I will miss her, her children and husband will miss her too,” I said to the nurse who was rubbing my back as I sobbed.
“Shhh, just calm down,” she said calmly and her voice was really soothing.
“How do I tell the kids that their mummy is never going to come back home again? How do I break the news to George who is already on his way from Atlanta?” I said. At that moment I realized I would have to be the bearer of the bad news.
“You’ll be fine my darling, let’s get you a bed to rest for a while,” the god-sent nurse said before taking me to a bed where I laid down and cried myself to sleep.
