“Open your mouth wider, like this Ahhhhhh,” Dr. Munroe said whilst he demonstrated.

“Ahhhhhhh” I imitated.

“Your wisdom tooth is what is giving you pains, it is an impacted tooth, and the earlier you remove it the better for you”

“Like extraction you mean?” I asked.

“Yes my dear” Dr. Munroe replied.
Fear was written all over my face as I had heard so much about extractions and I knew it wasn’t a jolly one, seeing how scared I was Dr. Munroe smiled and said.

“Don’t worry it’s not going to be painful, I am going to give you an injection that will make you numb, you won’t feel any pain after we are done, I promise”. He replied smiling and making me feel a lot better but then again no injection was sweet I thought to myself.

Naive me was ready to get done with everything and since the doctor assured me that the injection was going to make me numb.

“It’s not going to be painful, just a little prick and we will be done, look at the needle it’s a small one,” Dr. Munroe said while showing me the needle in his hands.

Just when he was about to start I remembered a conversation I had with my father's friend, “Never shake your body when you are about to be given an injection as the needle can break inside of your body”, Mr. George my father’s closet friend said to me. The moment I remembered that conversation my heart skipped for a moment, I started sweating even when the AC was on, the thought of a needle breaking inside of my gum scared the hell out of me.

Looking at my facial expression, Dr. Munroe looked at me worriedly.

“Are you alright IB?” he asked concern laced in his voice.”

“No sir, I am not,” I said almost teary.

“Calm down IB, take a deep breath, and let’s do this,” he said smiling at me.
I took a deep breath and laid down, The earlier I did the extraction the better for me, I thought to myself.

In a matter of minutes I felt the tiny needle go through my gum, on impulse I felt the pain but later I felt numb.
Dr. Munroe carried out his duty and before I knew it my wisdom tooth was out and he was was done with everything, While he was on it I didn’t feel any pain and I was glad that the injection was doing wonders, I was really surprised that a sweet injection existed and Dr. Munroe was right, so I thought.

After the whole extraction process I was taken to a dental nurse, I listened carefully to the dental nurse’s advice on the do's and don’ts of the aftermath of an extraction, I was given a prescription to buy some drugs at the pharmacy.

Just before I was about to enter the pharmacy, I started feeling some pains, little by little the pains intensified and I noticed the numbness started wearing off.

"Isn’t the injection supposed to take away all the pains as the doctor said, How come I am feeling some pains in my mouth, The doctor mentioned it was a sweet injection how come the reverse was happening", While all these thoughts were going through my head I became teary as the pains were increasing every seconds.
I didn’t know I was the next on the queue until the pharmacist tapped me and I came back to reality.
Seeing my teary eyes the pharmacist was concerned and asked what the problem was and I explained everything to him while sobbing quietly as I didn’t want to draw the attention of the other two people who were on the queue.

The pharmacist later took his time to explain to me that I was given anesthesia that was bound to wear off after the extraction was done, With each word that came out of his mouth my eyes widened, and on impulse, I wanted to go confront Dr. Munroe for lying to me but the pharmacist advised me against it and assured me I was going to feel better after taking the drugs that he was going to give me.

Angry and helpless me left the hospital with pains that the sweet injection could never take away.
