Today I have the pleasure of inviting you to discover one of the most beautiful places in Cuban geography, called 'El Nicho', located in the mountains of Cienfuegos province at 440 meters above sea level. In this second part of the tour I will show you how the internal journey through the forest was, the first trails, common mushrooms, small waterfalls, and the contact with nature.

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a conocer uno de los parajes más bellos de la geografía Cubana, llamado 'El Nicho', ubicado en las montañas de la provincia Cienfuegos a 440 metros sobre el nivel del mar. En esta segunda parte del recorrido les mostraré cómo fue la travesía interna al bosque, los primeros senderos, hongos comunes, pequeñas cascadas y el contacto con la naturaleza.

Upon crossing the wall, we enter the inner wonders of El Nicho "The Kingdom of the Waters," a 2 km trail that takes around 2 hours and has a low difficulty level.
The place has family rest areas: small ranches with zinc roofs, supported by green columns and surrounded by vegetation. It is a perfect pause to talk, share food, or simply appreciate nature. It's like entering a small, unknown world.
Al atravesar el muro, nos adentramos en las maravillas internas del Nicho "El Reino de las Aguas", un sendero de 2 km de recorrido que toma alrededor de 2 horas y presenta una dificultad baja.
El lugar cuenta con zonas de descanso en familia: pequeños ranchos con techos de zinc, sostenidos por columnas verdes y rodeados de vegetación. Es una pausa perfecta para conversar, compartir alimentos o simplemente apreciar la naturaleza. Es como entrar en un pequeño mundo desconocido.
Among the most abundant mushrooms in the place are the Oudemansiella Canarii. It is a species that frequents the vegetation complexes of Escaleras, especially in the rainy months. Some authors consider it edible, but we weren't going to try it anyway hahaha.
Whenever I have this kind of encounter with nature and the wildlife of our Cuban countryside, I take several photographs of these living beings, very beautiful with their umbrella shape in honeycombs. The climate here is always cool and humid, in contrast to the usual high temperatures of the Island.
Entre los hongos que más abundan el lugar están los Oudemansiella Canarii. Es una especié que frecuenta los complejos de vegetación de Escaleras, sobre todo en los meses de lluvia. Algunos autores lo consideran comestible, pero igual no lo íbamos a probar jjjj.
Siempre que hago este tipo de encuentros con la naturaleza y la vida silvestre de nuestros campos de Cuba, hago varias fotografías de estos seres vivos, muy bonitos con su forma de sombrilla en colmenas. El clima aquí siempre es fresco, húmedo, en contraste con las habituales temperaturas elevadas de la Isla.
The first waterfall of the journey is simple but attractive to the eye; it has a pipe on the side that I imagine is to supply the town with fresh, pure water that comes from the hills.
Every day, hundreds of travelers and photographers arrive at El Nicho, interested in capturing the beauty of the waterfalls. They also want images of the multicolored tocororos, the national bird of Cubans, alongside cartacubas, woodpeckers, and hummingbirds that live in the trees of this biological corridor, with many endemic plants.
La primera cascada de la travesía es sencilla pero atractiva a la vista, tiene una tubería al costado que me imagino que sea para abastecer el poblado de agua fresca y pura que viene de las lomas.
Al Nicho llegan diariamente cientos de viajeros y fotógrafos, interesados en captar la belleza de las cataratas. También quieren imágenes de los multicolores tocororos, ave nacional de los cubanos, al lado de cartacubas, pájaros carpinteros y colibríes que habitan en los árboles de este corredor biológico, con muchas plantas endémicas.
I tried to capture with my lens everything that was around. I really liked this excursion, because I wanted to show Hive that in Cuba there are still beautiful places to share, and I will try to go to each one of them to bring them to the travelers' community #worldmappin.
These small streams of water accompany the path until you come across spaces where the waterfalls amaze visitors and natural pools invite you to stop, bathe, breathe, and contemplate.
Traté de captar con mi lente todo lo que había alrededor. Esta excursión me gustó mucho, porque quería mostrarle a Hive que en Cuba aún quedan lugares bonitos por enseñar, e intentaré ir a cada uno de ellos para llevarlo a la comunidad de viajeros.
Estas pequeñas corrientes de agua acompañan el camino hasta encontrarse con espacios donde las cascadas asombran a los visitantes y pozas naturales invitan a detenerse, bañarse, respirar y contemplar.
Get ready to walk across rustic bridges with improvised railings, until you reach the next trail that allows you to contemplate an entire green world at your feet.
At least we had the idea to go with shoes, because in flip-flops it would have been more of a challenge and a risk of falling, like many of the travel companions.
Prepárense para transitar por puentes rústicos con improvisadas barandas, hasta llegar al siguiente sendero que permite contemplar todo un mundo verde a sus pies.
Al menos se nos ocurrió la idea de ir con zapatos, porque en chancletas hubiese sido un desafío más y un riesgo de caídas, como muchos de los compañeros del viaje.
On the sides of the path appear huge rocks covered with moss, roots that cross the earth, and abundant vegetation that turns the journey into a true adventure, and even more so for my brother, since it was his first time in an encounter of this kind outside the city.
The accumulation of various organic remains results in ideal substrates for the development of countless species of fungi. This time I came across the Favolus tenuiculus located on pieces of decomposing wood.
A los lados del camino aparecen enormes rocas cubiertas de musgo, raíces que atraviesan la tierra y una vegetación abundante que convierte el recorrido en una verdadera aventura, y más para mi hermano que era su primera vez en un encuentro de este tipo fuera de la ciudad.
La acumulación de diversos restos orgánicos resultan sustratos idóneos para el desarrollo de innumerables especies de hongos. Esta vez me encontré con los Favolus tenuiculus ubicado en trozos de madera en descomposición.
The Kingdom of the Waters is more than just a hike. It is an opportunity to disconnect, breathe fresh air, and look at nature calmly again.
The sound of the birds, the waterfalls, the natural silence of the forests, the movement of the tree branches, the humid atmosphere, and the coolness of its trails, is what makes the excursion most magical.
El Reino de las Aguas es algo más que una caminata. Es una oportunidad para desconectarse, respirar aire fresco y volver a mirar la naturaleza con calma.
El sonar de los pájaros, las cascadas, el silencio natural de los bosques, el movimiento de las ramas de los árboles, el ambiente húmedo, y la frialdad de sus senderos, es lo que más hace mágica la excursión.
To conclude this second part of the tour through the park, I will tell you that much more beauty is coming. Wait for the next few days and you will discover the Poceta de los Enamorados, the Crystal one, and the Desparramaderos waterfall, one of the largest and most famous in Cuba.
On the other side of the wall, it doesn't simply begin a trail. The Kingdom of the Waters begins. And El Nicho reveals itself step by step, through its natural gallery.
Para concluir esta segunda parte del recorrido por el parque, les comentaré que se viene mucha más belleza. Esperen los próximos días y conocerán la Poceta de los Enamorados, la de Cristal y la cascada de los Desparramaderos, una de las más grandes y famosas de Cuba.
Al otro lado del muro no comienza simplemente un sendero. Comienza el Reino de las Aguas. Y El Nicho se descubre paso a paso, por su galería natural.
