I once read too many articles on parenting that they literally overwhelmed me. There were many dos and donts and I especially took one article seriously. That was to change the way we talk to children. Instead of saying, "Do not run," we use, "Please walk."
I remembered myself looking at the list of 'what to say instead' and tried to memorize every single line, as well as put into practice. However, after few months of trying, I started to think why was I so harsh on myself, creating so many dos and don'ts to myself in terms of how to talk to my children.
When I was young, when my mother wanted to say "Do not run at the car park," she just said it as it was. "Do not run at the car park." And my sister and I were totally fine, we did not feel that it was impolite or rule-based at all. We did not find it carried any disciplinary tone as well.
The era has changed. Human change. Children change too, duh. But, do we want to think that they are so easily hurt by words? Can't we just say "do not run after you eat", "do not jump while eating grapes", etc. Why are we so fearful of hurting them with words. Are they so sensitive?
I wasn't specifically speaking on any topic, just typing out my thoughts, and forgive me if I express wrongly.
So, for awhile, I stopped reading articles after articles on parenting. Because, I truly believe by now there is no fixed way to parenting. Method A which works well for Parents/Children A may be detrimental to Parents/Children B.
Lastly, I truly believe God knows which son/daughter to give to which type of parents.
There are no fixed "Dos and Don'ts" which work well for all. Except here on freewrite, do not stop typing. Hehe.
