How I know this, is because, I'm 43 and my first love was my first girlfriend ever. I was 15.
I can still remember what her perfume smelled like and that I almost threw up when she told me, over 4 years later, that she did not want to go out anymore.
I used to get really attached.
She is still surprised to this day, when we speak, as we certainly do every so often, that I remember lots of stuff, like nirvana came out with teen spirit when we were going out and that she loved weird al.
Yeah, love that guy too. Just eat it!
Ok, now why are those memories so vivid?
Because memory is tied very tightly to emotion and, chances are, you had some very strong emotions when you got together with #1.
And, just like me tossing my cookies in the spare bathroom at her house, the one where her dad kept his hustler Mags under the guest magazines, breaking up is also a serious event.
You get exposed to the big three.
Emotionally we get damaged by the big three and this produces core memories to keep us safe later on from doing the same thing. Well, hopefully anyway.
Betrayal, abandonment and shame. The big three, B.A.Sh is an acronym I made up for that.
I hope I never forget any of my loves. They all taught me so much.
I hope you never want to either.
