Greetings to Splinterlands and chess fans. The story takes of after the events of the last post. It takes some inspirations from the winning entry of henruc@henruc.

After another enjoyable game of chess, Buns the Unseen and Jolius Blast decided it was time to take a break from their usual activities. They wanted something more relaxing.

“How about we go fishing?” Buns suggested. “There's a lake not far from here. The water is clear and I've heard there are plenty of fish.”

“Fishing? That's a welcome change from staring at a chessboard for hours,” Jolius replied.

Buns laughed. “Maybe you'll be lucky, my friend. At least the fish won't checkmate you!”

“Keep laughing, Buns. I have a feeling that I will catch a big one.”

And so, the two friends got their fishing gear and went to the lake.

A little while later, Buns caught something.

“I got one!” he declared.

He pulled with all his strength and with one final pull, Buns got his catch.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a fish. It was an old boot.

Jolius began laughing so hard. “A boot! You caught a boot!”

Buns looked down at his catch.

“Maybe it's a magical boot. You should try putting it on. It might grant you extra speed!” Jolius laughed.

Buns tossed the boot aside.

“Laugh all you want. At least I caught something!”

Then Jolius cast his line. “Just wait. I'll catch something big.”

Minutes passed. “Ha! I've got one!” Jolius shouted. “Help me out here, it's a big one!” Jolius cried.

It was big and was fighting back.

“It's huge!” Jolius exclaimed. “This has to be the biggest fish in the lake!”

With a final pull, they pulled his catch out of the water.

But instead of a fish, an angry creature was caught.

It was Ratbound Corsair!

The Water splinter warrior was wet, his trident tangled in the line and his expression was angry. His rat companions scrambled onto nearby rocks.

Jolius stared at the unexpected catch.

Ratbound Corsair tried to free his trident from the fishing line.

“Hey, what's the big idea?”

Jolius immediately loosened the line.

“Sorry about that! We were just fishing.

Ratbound Corsair looked at them angrily.

“Fishing? Do I look like a fish to you?”

Buns glanced at the trident, the merfolk like tail and the rats on the rocks.

“Well, you are a Water unit, you were in the water and half of you is fish.”

“That does not make me a fish!” Ratbound Corsair snapped.

Jolius scratched his head.

“We can agree to disagree. On the bright side, at least I didn't catch a boot.”

Buns burst out laughing again.

“Fine. I'll forgive you this time.” Ratbound Corsair sighed.

“Since we've already caught you, join us for lunch? We'll have some food, I hope you eat fish.”

Ratbound Corsair hesitated.

“I'm not part of the menu am I?”

“Maybe not,” Buns replied quickly eyeing Corsair's tail, “but we're friendly. And if you happen to play chess, you're welcome to challenge us while we prepare the cooking fire.”

Ratbound Corsair's eyed them suspiciously.

“What do you mean by "maybe not"? Anyway, I've played a few chess games. Maybe I could teach you a thing or two about strategy. I know an opening called the Norwegian Rat. I learned it from a fellow called Magnus Carlsen.”

“Now that's a challenge worth accepting. Jolius, why don't you start the fire and prepare the marinade while we're playing.”

To be continued...
