Invito a participar a
@emily2021 y
@belkyscabrera.

Greetings, dear friends at @hiveargentina. I am back in this community to participate in a new initiative Peculiar People || January 2026 Initiative. I invite
@emily2021 and
@belkyscabrera to participate.
I'm surprised that there's a day to commemorate peculiar people. They've chosen January 10th. As I always say, you learn something new every day. Throughout my life, I have met many peculiar people, and I respect their individuality even if I don't follow it. For example, at my workplace, the guy in the IT department is serious, doesn't usually say hello, and sometimes doesn't respond when someone says hello to him. You might think he's in a bad mood or got up on the wrong side of the bed, but no, that's just the way he is. Sometimes, after arriving so serious and not responding to greetings, after a while he approaches someone, myself included, smiling and saying something random. When he does that, I go along with it because I think it's the only way I can have a cordial conversation with him.
Peculiar people have unusual behaviors, feelings, and customs. In my case, I have some differences in certain habits, not in behavior, but in relation to food. So much so that I have been called a “weirdo” and an “alien.” One of those “strange” habits is that I don't drink coffee. You can imagine the look on people's faces when everyone is drinking coffee and I say no. A cup of black coffee is the first sip of many in the morning, but before that, that smell, I have nothing to do with it. People say, “If I don't drink coffee, I get a headache.” Coffee gives me insomnia, and for about two years now, it has made me want to vomit.
I remember when I was little and stayed with my grandmother and cousins, she would make us coffee with milk and bread with butter for breakfast. Everyone liked to dip their bread in the coffee with milk, but not me. I ate the bread first and then drank the coffee with milk, which, by the way, I liked sweet and very hot. I couldn't stand it lukewarm, not even as a joke, nor could I stand the bitterness. Definitely, that combination of sweet and salty wasn't consistent for me.
Sometimes, just sometimes, I would order a latte when I had breakfast at a bakery because I always preferred juice. Since I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, I am not allowed to drink coffee, among other foods, so that has not been a sacrifice for me. Another peculiarity? I don't like mangoes. Here in Venezuela, anyone who doesn't like that fruit is considered strange, well, me. Eat mangoes? Noooo, maybe I could drink them in juice, but I prefer not to. I only like mangoes in jelly.
I didn't like tomato sauce and mayonnaise, so no spaghetti with those accompaniments. My mother couldn't put mayonnaise on the salad; everyone had to do it on their own plate in case I wanted seconds. My salad was always without mayonnaise; I felt that when you added it, everything tasted like mayonnaise, and the idea was to savor the ingredients of the salad. Curiously, I only liked mayonnaise and tomato sauce on hot dogs and hamburgers. Who doesn't like mayonnaise on salad? Well, I don't, which is why I'm also considered a “weirdo.”
I think that being peculiar is not a virtue or a punishment, but rather characteristics that define a person as part of their life. Sometimes, one of my coworkers surprises me. We have in common that we don't drink coffee, so now there are two of us “aliens.” However, he tells me that he only eats tomatoes without the skin, that he has to eat onions fried, and that if he doesn't listen to music at full volume, it's better not to listen to it at all. Breaking with convention can generate curiosity, surprise, and even make people a little uncomfortable. However, we must be aware that we are all different and that this must be respected.
That's all for now. Thank you to the community for bringing us these interesting initiatives.
