While the shadows of the night cover the ranch of misfortune with her gray cloak, the woman cries over the corpse of her companion her infinite misfortune.
She has been left alone in the world.
The fading light of the only lighted candle accentuates the darkness around her as if the master of darkness gathered her hosts to perform some disgusting act.
But the indomitable spirit of the woman in disgrace does not yield to the injustice of her loss and her courageous soul springs the courage necessary to overcome, to raise her head and await the time of prosperity that will inevitably come. Like the stars, whose beauty shines when it is darkest.
With that thought, she forgets for a moment the horror of death, she brings both hands to her increasingly prominent abdomen as a sign of instinctive protection to the being inside. Something is very wrong, she senses it, in a swift movement she approaches her mouth to the candle and blowing desperately blows it out, leaving her in absolute darkness.
Outside, a gust of wind howls as it passes through the cracks of the old rickety door. Nothing else is heard but she senses danger, someone or something is hanging around near the house.
She fumbles through the kitchen, closes her eyes to imagine the outline of the room, knows it by heart and knows where to go, the drawer where she keeps the old butcher's knife with which she cut and cut so many times what her husband brought from the field.
With the relative security of steel and the bone hilt in her hands, she huddled in a corner waiting for the outcome.
She woke up suddenly, startled and drunk, for an instant she didn't know where she was until she remembered and a shiver ran through her entire body.
The dawn let in enough light to see the whole room, the bed was warm, her husband asleep next to her, in the crib, her little son was looking at her, curious, with those beautiful and big eyes with which he had been born.
The husband, stretching himself, said something incomprehensible and then added:
- Sleep a little longer, Alondra, today is Sunday. I told you not to have dinner so late, then you have nightmares.
