Leather ball
I remember when I was a child and I began to like soccer, I don't mean kicking the ball and competing with other children but learning about the teams that made up the first division championship, following my favorite on the radio and in the newspapers and all those things that many children embrace with passion from an early age for a sport.
Any year that I cannot specify, but I suspect between 1962 and 1964, the album and the figurines (in some parts they are called trading cards or stickers) went on sale to collect the players of all the teams in the local championship, I remember that the brand commercial was Starosta although at that time there was a kind of rage for this type of collection and there were several other brands that competed to be the most sold and used by children.
The novelty, in this case, was that filling the album had an important and highly promoted prize: a leather ball; almost impossible to acquire in those years, all of us children played with rubber balls, more girls, bouncy and bouncy, but it was what our parents' skinny pockets could buy us. That or one made of old rags, the poorest children managed by making a bun with rags, and that way they satisfied their need to kick, score goals, and tire themselves out. Anything was a justification to enjoy the sport and get dirty to the unspeakable.
That year, which was the first year that I became interested in figurines, I started very well with my album and in a short time, I had it almost complete, including the packages that my father bought me when he returned from work and the ones that I exchanged and won in the games. that we did at school and on the street the repeated ones, I only needed three to finish it and win the biggest prize: the long-awaited leather ball.
I didn't know it then, but the three I was missing were the most difficult on the album. As a commercial strategy, the manufacturers chose some at random and made a minimum quantity of them, thus ensuring more sales and having to award fewer prizes. . Something cruel if you think that we consumers were children full of illusion, but perhaps it was also a way of teaching us that life would not be as easy and fantastic as we supposed in those early childhood years.
The days went by and I couldn't get any. In a last desperate attempt, my father, making a supreme effort that I didn't understand until many years later, brought me a full box of packages of figurines one night, one hundred envelopes on which they were based. my last hopes
After dinner we spent more than an hour opening and reviewing each package, it was a great test of character to have to wait until then, but in those years the parents said something and we obeyed, something quite different from how it is today.
The disappointment came at the end, only one of the three that I was missing appeared among so many that I had to review, it was Puntorero, Atlanta striker. the other two did not appear.
And not only did they not appear, but also I could never get them, so close but so far from my long-awaited leather ball.
In the following season, I tried to fill the album again but I had already been warned, I had "life experience" and I was not excited about completing it, I did well, but the manufacturers still had that ugly habit of making less than some, "the difficult ones" we said and for the second consecutive year, I was close but not enough.
Perhaps because of the great disappointment that most of the children experienced, after a few years the collections of figurines went on sale with something called a "filling guarantee", if someone could not complete the album, just by writing a letter to the manufacturers They sent him the missing ones at the price of a package each figurine.
But one detail did not escape the memory of the children, filling the album no longer had a prize.
As time went by, leather balls became more accessible and when I turned 12 they gave me one as a gift. At the premiere, in the middle of an impromptu football match at the birthday party itself in a fairly narrow corridor, a friend kicked my new ball hard which unfortunately hit my right eye, leaving me with a big bruise and swelling. which lasted several days.
