Ahora volvemos a ello.

The wild-card round is practically wrapped up. We still have one survivor left, and that was the Phillies pulling off an unbelievable redemption arc. Now we’re right back at it. It was all for nothing that Venezuelan first baseman Willson Contreras brought the Red Sox within one with a solo jack in the top of the sixth, cutting the Yankees' lead to 2-1 over the Boston squad. We thought it would spark a lineup that simply ran out of gas. Boston wasn't even a shadow of that squad that pulled off an incredible mid-season surge. The Bronx Bombers, on the other hand, absolutely steamrolled them. Cody Bellinger put the team on his back and drove in 4 runs to be the star of a 9-2 blowout at the "House That Ruth Built." Max Fried took care of business from the bump, shutting down any threat and fanning 6 over six innings of work while giving up just 3 hits. The Yankee bullpen allowed only one more hit the rest of the way. It was tough for this writer to watch such a massive collapse from a team that maybe didn't deserve to be there in the first place. Completely humiliated. Word leaked to the press about a clubhouse altercation in Boston after the game. Total frustration.

The experiment of moving someone to the outfield who hadn't played there in a minute almost cost the Phillies the game. Bryce Harper was shifted to patrol the grass for Philly after the trade deadline to clear a spot in the infield for Venezuelan second baseman Luis Arráez. And yesterday, a costly misread on a fly ball hit by Drake Baldwin led to an outfield blunder that allowed the Braves to break a 1-1 tie and go up by two in the bottom of the seventh. But redemption is always out there for anyone ready to grab it, and in the very next frame, Harper did what he does best: a solo jack to knot things up in the top of the eighth, right after a long ball by Kyle Schwarber brought them within one. Unreal. They had to go to extra frames without the automatic runner on second before Alec Bohm did his thing to set the final score at 4-3. Today is a winner-take-all.

The rookies do it again. It is unbelievable to see the Chicago White Sox playing with a bunch of no-names on the roster and still walking away with the W. Meanwhile, the Astros looked like the road team in their own ballpark. "Astroboy" José Altuve couldn't do it all, even though he launched his 28th career postseason homer, leaving him just one shy of the all-time playoff record held by Manny Ramírez. Joe Espada is going to take a ton of heat after how the team performed this campaign. This time around, it was rookie second baseman Chase Meidroth who went deep to drive in 3 runs. Once again, the South Siders' bullpen locked it down in a game where the only damage from the Houston squad was surrendered by Chicago starter Sean Burke. A much more interesting matchup awaits us as we watch this squad clash with the veteran Cleveland Guardians. Houston will have to fix their issues by making moves in the offseason. For them, October is officially over.

Esperemos.

And what about the Chicago Cubs? Everyone thought this would be the Windy City team to make a deep October run. But look how things turned out. The baby bears looked like exactly that against a powerhouse San Diego Padres squad that was actually a bit more quiet on offense this time around. But we all knew one thing: once the Friars' starter handed the ball over to the bullpen, the Chicago offense would have little to no chance. And that's exactly how it played out. If you want to beat San Diego, you have to scratch across runs early in the ballgame; otherwise, kiss it goodbye. Gavin Sheets broke it open with a 2-run blast in a game where Venezuelan backstop Ethan Salas also chipped in with an RBI sac fly. 4 to 1 was the final score, and now we've got a Padres-Dodgers series set for Los Angeles. Never before have the Padres been this close to seeing another World Series, but they’ll have to chew on a tough task and shut down Ohtani and company. It’s going to be fun to see if the Friars can repeat the results of their last series matchup, where they came out on top at Dodger Stadium. Let’s wait and see.
