The most important category of Argentine motorsport is called Turismo Carretera or TC, from there some of the most extraordinary drivers emerged such as Juan Manuel Fangio, José Froilán González, and Carlos Alberto Reutemann among those best known for having been part of Formula 1. Still, others have also stood out both locally and internationally, José María "Pechito" López three-time world tourism champion and two-time FIA world endurance champion, also the winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans, just like José Froilán González, who, for those who do not know the history of motorsports, was the driver who gave Ferrari the first victory in F1, no less. Currently, the 4-time TC champion is now experimenting in IndyCar, Agustín Canapino.
Yesterday the fourth date of the tournament was held in Toay, a town on 25 de Mayo in the province of La Pampa. The 3 qualifying series that also determine the starting order for the grand final were dominated 2 by Chevrolet and by Ford in the victories of Ciantini, Mazzacane, and Martinez respectively. José Ciantini dominated his series with complete ease, beating a Mustang driven by De Benedictis by more than 8 seconds. The second series was much more fought where Mazzacane took first position against Werner's Mustang, and the third and final battery saw triumph to the Ford of Agustín Martínez who was 1 second ahead of the Dodge of Facundo Chapur.
In the final, it seemed that nothing would prevent José Ciantini from winning, as he had been winning by a great difference over all his pursuers. Still, with 7 laps to go before the checkered flag, the car of the winner of the second series, Gastón's Chevrolet Mazzacane had a fault and was stopped on the track so the safety car came out. There he made the best use of Mariano Werner's entry into the pits and on the restart, he positioned himself very close to Ciantini to pass him shortly after encountering a triumph little expected by the public in general and specialists in particular.
In this way, after 57 years, a Mustang wins again in Road Tourism; All this time must have passed for the legendary car to win again on our soil, at that time a Mustang F-100 driven by Oscar Cabalén triumphed, coincidentally, in the "Vuelta de La Pampa", although at that time the category was still running in armed circuits for the occasion using the country's routes.
The Mustang returns to the category thanks to the total renewal of the vehicle fleet promoted by the ACTC (Association of Road Tourism Corridors) which stops using old chassis and turns to the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, Toyota Camry, and New Torino Generation.
Ciantini and I were quite sorry because the "goat" lost the opportunity to win with just a few meters left before the flag was lowered, but with hope intact after a great superiority demonstrated both in the series and in the final. Just another Chevrolet caused the safety car and consequently, the great accumulated advantage was reduced to nothing. But races are races and I think we will soon have revenge, there is something to be excited about.
