오늘 아침, 엄마가 지난 저녁 만들어준 닭볶음탕을 먹으며 영화 프로그램을 보고 있었다. 그때 ‘재심’이란 영화가 나왔다. 내가 몇 십 번을 넘게 본 ‘꽃보다 청춘-아이슬란드 편’의 주인공인 배우 정우와 강하늘이 출연한 영화. 진짜 사건을 모티브로 한 이 영화는 짧은 소개 정도였지만 중간중간 답답함을 주기도, 뭉클함을 주기도 했다. 식사를 마치고 방으로 들어와 바로 영화를 찾아 틀었다.
돈 때문에 변호를 맡았지만 결국 억울한 강하늘의 누명을 벗겨주는 정우의 연기가 눈을 사로 잡았다. 정우의 연기가 마음을 사로잡음과 동시에 그가 연기한 실제 변호사의 이야기가 궁금해졌다.
이후 영화가 끝나고 그의 인터뷰를 찾아보게 됐다. 그리고 인터뷰를 보면서 순간적인 철렁함을 느꼈다.
“저의 아버지가 장의사를 운영하셨거든요. 사람 죽었다는 연락을 받으면 어린 마음에 그렇게 기뻤어요. 물건을 파는 느낌이었죠. 그런데 생각해보니 제 직업도 다를 바가 없더라구요. 아주 다른 것 같지만 본질적으로 남의 불행을 먹고사는 직업에선 같죠. 남의 불행에 대해 그간 얼마나 공감하고 배려하고 살았는지 곱씹어 보게 됐어요” - '스타일러 주부생활' 인터뷰 中
남의 불행을 먹고사는 직업이라는 부분에서 내 직업을 돌아보게 됐다. 기자라는 직업이 어쩌면 같은 맥락이지 않을까. 때로는 남의 행복을 먹고 살 때도 있으나 그렇지 않을 때도 많다. 물론 분야별로 다르게 접근할 수 있겠지만 대체로 그렇다고 생각하는 사람들이 많을 수밖에.
그 부분에 대해 회의감을 느끼고 떠나는 기자들도 많고, 비난하는 대중들도 많다. 매번 사건이 터질 때마다 드는 생각. 어쩌면 이 직업을 때려치워도 생각하게 될 것이 분명하다.
다시 돌아와서, 결과적으로 변호사는 저 사건을 겪고 돈을 좇기보다는 곤란한 처지에 있는 사람들을 변호하며 ‘재심 전문 변호사’라는 타이틀을 얻게 됐다. 시작이 어쨌건 과정을 경험하며 인생의 전환점을 맞이하게 됐다는 것.
현재의 위치에 있으면서 인생의 목표가 바뀌고 삶을 돌아보는 일생일대의 사건이 언젠가 한 번은 반드시 올 거라고 생각한다. 터닝포인트라고 불리는 것, 이미 나에게 왔지만 모르고 지나갔을 수도 있다.
하지만 분명한 건, 인생의 터닝포인트는 그동안 갖고 있던 편견과 상식을 부숴버릴 만큼 강력한 힘을 갖고 있다는 것이다.
그래서 언제나 기다린다. 인생의 터닝포인트.
This morning, I was watching a movie program while eating the chicken bokkeum that my mom cooked for me last night. Then came the film 'New Trial'. The movie starring actor Jung woo and Kang Ha-neul, the main characters of ' Youth than Flower ' I watched more than a few decades ago. It was a short, but touching movie with a real incident in mind. After eating, I went into my room and found a movie.
He was called in for money, but finally caught in the act by his father, who cleared Kang of any wrongdoing. As Jeong-woo's performance captivated me, I was curious about the story of the real lawyer he played.
After the movie, I looked for his interview. And I felt a momentary disqualification during the interview.
"My father ran an undertaker. I was so happy to hear that people were dead. It was like selling things. But when I came to think of it, I couldn't have a different job. It looks very different, but it's essentially the same in a job where you feed on others ' misfortunes. I have been reminded of how sympathetic and caring I have been to others ' misfortunes."
I have now turned my back on the job of being the one who lives off the fat of the land. Maybe the journalist is in the same vein. Sometimes I live on the happiness of others, but not always. Of course, there are many people who think they can approach different areas differently.
There are many reporters who leave with skepticism about it, and there are many people who criticize it. Every time something goes wrong, I'm sure you'll think about it.
Back then, the lawyer ended up as the ' re-judge lawyer, ' defending people in need rather than going through that incident and chasing money. The first part of his career, however, began to see a turning point in his life.
I believe that the goal of life changes and that one day a lifetime of events looking back on life will come at one point or another. What is called turning point, may have come to me already but did not know.
But the turning point in life, obviously, is strong enough to break the prejudices and common sense that it has so far.
