I don't care much about the places where we go, as I've proven often enough in this community, I do think. My logic is, if we're going to spend money on something, be it drinks, dinner or coffee, I'd rather it was some place special and nice. And on my recent trip to Krakow, I found just the place, thanks to my travel companion who picked it especially for my inner (and outer) bookworm.
Nestled inside the old Jewish Quarter, Cafe Cytat is the perfect little spot to grab breakfast when you're living out of the hotel for a couple of days (or just wanna get on the road as soon as you possibly can), as they've got a decent selection. The food's more than decent and the coffee is alright. Nothing that would tickle the palate of my dear connoisseur @ninaeatshere, though I do believe she would appreciate the cozy, bookish atmosphere.
I went there a couple of times during my trip and frankly, the first morning, my head was reeling from what's very likely the most intense headache of my life. Is it getting old, a change in my inner balance, the Universe trying to punish me for a past life? I've noticed lately, my body doesn't tolerate alcohol nearly as well as it used to. And trust me when I say, it used to.
So there I was, two teeny-tiny glasses of last night's wine wreaking havoc over my entire existence. I was so desperate to get some coffee in me as that usually helps, I could've been dining in Hell. But I did notice the lovely vibe. Decorated wall-to-wall with books, the cafe (whose name translates as "reading", I assume, based on my summary Russian vocab) bows to all the literary greats - Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and so on.
Even dear old Jimmy H got a passing wave. But I suppose a little bit of edginess compensates my inner nerd. So all good.
Of course, since most of the books were in Polish, there was only so much wandering about I could do while I snapped pics and waited for my damn coffee. A pretty ordinary Flat White which immediately invited a hankering for a second cup of coffee, of course.
Though I was momentarily appeased by the neat little trick they got of bringing your drink with a side of wit. We got quotes both from high-brow literary sorts of people, but also not.
Seems mine was spot on! Though I'm glad to report my headache did eventually abate after about the third or fourth cup and many hours of just...existing. I mean, I gotta say, if this is all adulthood has to offer, I would much rather go back to being 17.
The ability to make choices about where I go, however, is one thing that keeps me tethered to all my years on this planet. Gotta take the good with the bad, nay? And after all, they were kinda cute. And did feed me.
Yes, the bar really is that low to get on my good side.
I, as you can see, took the Harry Potter option, and did the supremely touristy and girly thing of snapping a selfie in the bathroom. Hey, if I'm gonna do the picture-thing, I might as well go all out. Hi!
Besides, there's just something about Gary Oldman...you know?
All in all, *Cytat Cafe was a fun little stop in a city (and neighborhood, particularly) saturated with cafes and bars. I thought it stood out a little bit from the rest. There's just something about books and coffee, isn't there? Or is that just in my head? :)
Anyway. Cheerio for now.
