Bhimtal is a town in the Nainital district of the state of Uttarakhand, India. The city's name Bhimtal is derived from the Bhimtal lake, which is situated in the middle of the city. Due to being 'Bhimakar', perhaps this rhythm is called Bhimtal. But some scholars associate this rhythm with Pandu-son Bhima. It is believed that the Pandavas had come to this area at the time of their exile, and Bhima did penance to Lord Shiva on the banks of Bhimtal. In the thirteenth century this region came under the Kumaon kingdom, and in the seventeenth century, Raja Baz Bahadur Chand of Almora established the Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple. It used to be the headquarters of Chhakhata Pargana in the Chand period.
