My entry for the Monomad Contest 27 july 2020
The holiday time is already coming to an end unfortunately. Only one more week, and it is already over… But if you think that I have been able to really rest in these 2 holiday weeks, then I must disappoint you. It has been almost busier than before. Many chores in the house have been tackled again, and other jobs that might be needed immediately, but which require a lot of time, have also been tackled and are also approaching the end. Which is of course also necessary, because from next week it will be normal to work again and only the weekends will be free time again.
Where I really had many plans to go out with the dogs, now that there is a car in the driveway, even that has not really happened so far. They have not gone further than normal walks. Fortunately, they have considerably less trouble with that than I do. But I just made that promise to myself… I will and must REALLY go to my beloved Maashorst with the dogs for a lovely walk with the dogs. There they can swim, and… yes of course the camera will also come along. Anyway, wait a while. The jobs in the house really had to be tackled… and now that summer this year in the Netherlands does not want to look like summer at all, it was also the perfect time for it.
No burning sun when you are doing odd jobs is also nice. Only if you have to saw a lot outside, it is not useful if it rains cats and dogs every day. Where the rain barrels were empty every year and did not seem to want to drop a drop of water ... they are now almost unnecessary. In any case, we have not had as much rain here as this summer for years. 2015 is the last summer I can remember that it rained continuously in the beginning of the summer, but after that it turned into beautiful summer weather in July and August. Now we are at the end of July, and the summer is not yet ready.
At least today I had a nice chat with my sister who came to visit unexpectedly… although she also brought less news with her. One of the few aunts I still have contact with I diagnosed with cancer. After I recovered from that shock, and strongly resolved to call her immediately after my sister left, we had a nice chat. Then she wanted to take a look around the garden and of course that is always a good excuse to be outside, despite the fact that it was raining again. When we were outside we saw a small wagtail that was flying weird.
First he flew up against the wall, then he made some weird hover movements again and suddenly he flew up to land in the full rain barrel. There he opened his wings and floated dazed on the water. Of course we immediately took action and fished the small chunk pilot out of the rain barrel…
He sat very quietly in the hands of his lifesaver. I quickly grabbed my camera and took this photo. After he had dried up and warmed up enough, he hopped out of his savior's hands… and flew back to his mom and dad who were flying around in the neighborhood squeaky. Clearly looking for the adventurous youngster. I hope he will pay more attention during the next flying lesson and quickly learn that a rain barrel is not a good landing place.
