The part of the country where I live is the nerve center of the country's weaving industry. We also have some looms in our house. With which we make sari.We have been doing this for about 25-30 years now. The beginning of this weaving industry through my father.
Today I will tell you how we make sari cloth by weaving.
We only buy yarn and dyes from the local market. Then we do all the work of making sari in our house. The yarns purchased first were tied in a rod with the women of the village. In our language we call the rod wrapped in yarn 'Nali'. Which is filled with shuttle and sari is woven.
A worker gets one hundred taka for making a sari cloth. At first the wage per sari was 20 taka. It has increased to 100 taka now. It depends on the type of sari cloth.
30-35 saris are made daily in our house. We sell each sari for 600 taka. Our business is much smaller than others in the region. Our business is still what it used to be. Because we can't help our father much in business. In fact, the entire business is run by the parents alone.
We have a market here two days a week. The saris are sold there. Our homemade sarees are very simple. Most of these migrate to the northern part of the country and to West Bengal in India. Sales were down due to border closures during the lockdown.
Now that has become normal.
The work of making sari is a very challenging subject. Girls are not wearing sari like before.
Readymade garments like pants, frocks, t-shirts etc are mostly used by girls now. So the sari making industry is going through hard times now.
We also know that the government of Bangladesh imports cotton the most in terms of money. Which is the main raw material for making yarn. That is why the government has to get a lot of speed to control the price of yarn. We hope all these problems will be solved one day.
The weaving industry of our region will get its life back. I will cherish my father's profession as long as I live. Because we have emotions mixed with weaving. Most importantly, we have a close relationship with those who make sarees at home. This relationship lasts till death.Occasionally we have a picnic with them. Through which there is a brotherhood between us and the artisans.
If you want to see the best worker-employer relationship in the world, you have to come to the loom village in our region. So if any friend wants to see the art of sari making, then you can visit our region.
