I don't know when, but I feel like I learned about the concept of Love Languages quite late.
When I was younger, I was that friend who would go out of her way to surprise someone or try to make someone happy. I would work on handmade presents and plan out dates. I was always willing to compromise and adjust. It might seem too much to others, but that was just me, and I didn't mind.
But just because I loved doing what I was doing, doesn't mean I never felt bad. Yes, there were moments when I questioned whether the people I loved truly loved and valued me as well. I did not directly ask or tell them how I felt because I knew that I really was important to them, too. But for some unknown reason, there was always a bugging feeling in me that would make me doubt. It was as if I knew that they loved me, but I couldn't feel it.
And that, right there, was the problem.
Apparently, I sometimes couldn't feel others' love towards me because they were showing it in a way different from what I was expecting.
Love languages are said to show how we receive or express our love. So when I learned about it, things started to make sense.
According to the book, 5 Love Languges: The Secret to Love that Lasts by Gary Chapman, there are 5 kinds of Language Languges. These are Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, and Giving Gifts. There are already countless of articles explaining these love languages, so I would not dig deep on that here.
Instead, I would like to share with you this website wherein you can take a quiz to help you find out your love language. You may find it here: 5lovelanguages.com
I first took this quiz several years back, and my dominant love language then, according to the result, was Physical Touch. I specifically used the term dominant for the reason that just because one love language is above the others, doesn't mean you are no longer capable of showing love in other ways. It's just that, there is one of them you relate to the most.
I took this for the second time last 2019, and this was my result:
I took this quiz again last week, and this was my result...
As you can see, my dominant love language before is different from my current result. Does this mean the quiz is not reliable? Maybe? But it could also mean that I changed and grew.
I am sharing this with you because being aware about our love language could help us know ourselves more. It could also save relationships from potential misunderstandings. It would help us know what to expect from certain people and vice versa.
I guess, love is indeed all around us. Only, it is shared through different ways and forms.
Advanced Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!
How about you? What is your love language?
Stay sane and safe!
Let's spread happiness.
