OK, round three.
I bookmarked the earth day challenge on @ecency a few days ago and have been very excited to write about it. For whatever reason, I've found myself in a really down mood today and unable to write; I think probably stemming from a political discussion I had this morning.. so I'm the idiot for even subjecting myself to that 馃槀
Earth Day
What does Earth Day mean to me? Honestly, not much. And before you exit out of this and consider me an asshole, let me explain why.
I try to live my life every day like an "earth day". I don't mean I'm always actively thinking about it or even making intentional actions every day; what I mean is that I try to make it a routine in my life. I believe developing environmentally-friendly, daily habits in an individual's life has a much more positive effect than focusing on them for a day and then returning to normal life.
Now, I am in NO WAY demonizing or saying anything remotely negative about Earth Day!! I think it's a wonderful, wonderful thing. And it motivates a lot of people to start these efforts in their daily lives as well. I'm just being honest as to what it means to myself, and why I don't think about it too much.
I believe that we all, every single one of us, can strive to make more conscious decisions in our daily lives; and that is what will give us that big change that our planet so desperately needs.
I'm going to do my best to answer all 5 of these questions, however to be honest, I'm not sure how well I'll be able to. I'm really not too knowledgeable about the ins and outs of environmentalism. I just try to do what I can in my daily life.
- What are you doing for the environment to help Mother Earth?
I don't really know how to answer this. I do obvious small things; conserve electricity, conserve water, recycle, repurpose.. you know, the things most people usually do. I've tried creating a home compost system about 4-5 times on my small apartment balcony but have failed every time 馃槀 but I keep trying. Currently I'm trying the Ruth Stout method with my illegally created patch of garden in front of the front door. The management was upset I did it without permission, but they didn't exactly tell me to remove it either hahah. This is my first time trying the system and I hope it goes well. Has anyone else tried the Ruth Stout composting method?
I try to pick up litter as much as I can and will occasionally go out with a trash bag and gloves and fill the bag as much as I can. Recently I've made an effort to do this weekly, on Tuesdays, as a routine.
I've been a vegetarian for roughly two years now. This is my third go at it, although this time I actually have the resources(really meaning adequate refrigerator and kitchen, not constantly moving and living off change ahhaha) to make it last. The reason I mention this is because I decided to stop eating meat for environmental reasons. I hate the mass produced meat industry. It has been absolutely destroying the environment in countless ways. I stopped eating meat for the purposes of not supporting the meat industry above anything else.
And then just a lot of other little, typical things. Being conscious of what I buy is a big one. It's a constant learning process because there is sooo much to learn about what products have what in them, what each of those ingredients represents.. it's complicated. A constant learning process.
- (2) Do you have a message to tell the world about the environmental impact that Mother Earth is experiencing?
Ummmmmm for lack of a better phrase, "we're fucked"? 馃槀 No no no, it's really not funny. I'm sorry. But it's the truth. We are killing this planet, rapidly. And that's why I believe it's important that every human tries their best to make changes in their daily routine. Globally. Otherwise, it won't be long until this place becomes uninhabitable
- (3) What are the tips and steps could you offer others, to support the care of the Earth?
I think for the average person; just care. Like, just give a shit once in awhile. But when I say average person, I'm not speaking about anyone reading this. I mean, the majority of people. Everywhere. Just reading something about Earth Day isn't something the average person would do.
But, for the rest of us; I think the last part I mentioned in my answer to number 1. The learning. The constant, active learning of where products really come from. There are ingredients in so many of our daily products that are sourced in extremely unethical ways. It's a lifelong active learning process, and that's the hardest part. Making that a habit. It isn't all that easy. But it's necessary.
- (4) Do you have any rituals that benefit our planet?
Mm, rituals? No, not really. Routines, sure. But not rituals. I do partake in personal rituals; but not relative to the environment, unfortunately.
- (5) What do you think about the laws, norms, measures that your country has taken about the environment?
I don't hold a very high opinion on my country's impact on the environment. I live in the United States. We're not exactly role models in ANY category. However, on an individual basis(levels below laws and regulations), I've seen a lot more conscious effort developing in the past 15 years or so. Maybe longer, I don't know, I'm 27 so I don't know much about what was going on before that on a local level. But individual people, businesses, even larger companies are making their own individual efforts more and more. Sure, maybe some of the corporation efforts are for show; but hey, whatever it takes. The point is it seems to be an upward trend
I hope my answers make some sort of sense. I really do try to learn about how I can be better every day. It's an ongoing process and I'm not great at it. But at the very least, I can say I'm actively trying. And I think we all should be! Please, give me some tips :)
I would like to encourage @zoeanavid to partake in this. Zoe, I know you have stopped posting here on HIVE but you're not all that sneaky and I can see you've still remained active on your account. You can't fake it any more. I'm calling you out! I know this challenge is right up your alley and the blockchain would really benefit from the return of your presence here.
