Honestly this movie stressed me out.. in a good way I must say.... It asks one very uncomfortable question.... How well do you really know the person you're about to marry?.
The movie follows Charlie, played by Robert Pattinson, and Emma, played by Zendaya... They're a young couple who seem to have everything going for them.
They're in love, They're getting married, Their lives look almost perfect..
They're that kind of couple you see and think, “These people have their whole lives figured out”?..
Until one night, during a stupid little drinking game with their friends, they decide to confess the worst things they've ever done and then Emma talks.... And suddenly... Everything changes.
I'm not going to tell you exactly what she reveals because I genuinely think it's better to experience that moment yourself.... But let's just say... If the person you're about to marry told you something THAT serious about their past, I honestly don't know how anybody is supposed to sleep peacefully that night and that's where The Drama becomes interesting because this isn't really a movie about what Emma did.
It's about what happens AFTER Charlie finds out...
Can you still love somebody after discovering something terrible about them?... And then separate the person they are today from the person they used to be?
And perhaps the biggest question.... Does love mean accepting everything about someone? Or are there certain things that simply change the way you see a person forever?...
Those questions kept running through my head while watching this....Robert Pattinson was really good in this movie.
Very good....Charlie is awkward, anxious, emotional and sometimes honestly a little annoying but that's what makes him interesting.... Pattinson plays him like a man whose brain simply refuses to switch off....You can see him thinking, Overthinking, Then thinking about the fact that he's overthinking, Then overthinking that and honestly, I could relate to some of that because when somebody tells you something that completely changes your perception of them, your brain doesn't just say.... “Okay, information received.”.. It starts replaying every conversation you've ever had with that person....
Every look, Every joke, Every strange thing they said... Suddenly you're looking at old memories differently and that's exactly what Charlie goes through..
Zendaya also surprised me... it wasn't easy to understand her character... At first, she's just this charming, beautiful woman who seems genuinely in love with Charlie but after her confession, you start questioning everything... Was she always hiding something?... Is she genuinely remorseful?... Does the person she is now matter more than the person she used to be?.. and Zendaya does a good job of keeping Emma complicated...
The movie doesn't make it easy for you to decide how you're supposed to feel.
The chemistry between Zendaya and Pattinson is probably the strongest thing about the film.... They feel like a real couple, They joke together, They annoy each other, They have awkward moments.
They have chemistry and then the confession comes along and basically puts a giant crack through everything they've built....
The movie also has some surprisingly funny moments and I wasn't expecting that..... You have this incredibly uncomfortable situation happening, but then somebody says something so ridiculous that you find yourself laughing.
It's very dark humour.... The kind where you're laughing and immediately thinking:
“Wait... should I actually be laughing at this?” ... That's very much the style of director Kristoffer Borgli...
The movie starts looking like a romantic comedy, then slowly becomes something much darker and more uncomfortable....
I also felt the movie could have explored Charlie's character more deeply.... We understand his reaction, but I wanted to know more about what was happening inside him.... Was he struggling because of what Emma had done?... Was he worried about what people would think... Was he afraid of marrying someone he suddenly realised he didn't fully know?.. Or was he simply scared of losing the future he had imagined?
There are pieces of all of those things, but I wanted more and The Drama made me ask what I would do if I was in that situation..
I wouldn't call it a perfect movie...It's weird., It's uncomfortable, It's funny in some very inappropriate places and sometimes it feels like the movie is trying too hard to shock you but Zendaya and Robert Pattinson carry it.... Their performances make the whole thing work and the relationship at the centre of the movie feels real enough that when things start falling apart, you actually care...
