Honestly, I was curious about this one because Frances Neagley has always been one of the most interesting characters in Reacher... She is not the loudest person in the room, She does not waste time talking, She does not need to prove that she is dangerous, She just walks in, studies the situation and handles business.. So giving her a series of her own actually makes sense.
The story follows Frances Neagley, a former military investigator who now works as a private investigator in Chicago. Her life changes when she learns that her childhood friend, Tommy Crane, has died under suspicious circumstances.. At first, it looks like an accident, but Neagley quickly realises that something is not right.
Her investigation leads her toward a mysterious rural cult, dangerous people, a suspicious pharmaceutical operation and secrets connected to her own past... So yes, it starts like a normal investigation and then slowly becomes a much bigger problem. Because apparently, Neagley cannot just have a quiet week.
What I liked immediately was that the series does not try to turn Neagley into a female version of Jack Reacher... They are similar in some ways, especially when it comes to their military background, intelligence and willingness to use violence when necessary but Neagley has her own personality.
She is more reserved, more emotionally guarded and less interested in forming connections with people... She prefers to work alone but the case gradually forces her to depend on others.. That part of the story was actually important because it gives the character more depth than simply making her another unstoppable action hero.
Maria Sten was excellent in the role.. She has the physical presence needed for the action scenes but she also knows how to communicate emotion without saying too much.. Neagley is not someone who will sit down and explain every feeling she has as a lot of her pain is hidden behind her silence, routine and control.. The series also explores the trauma behind her fear of physical contact, which gives us a better understanding of why she keeps people at a distance. I liked that the show did not just use this as a strange character trait. It connects to her past and becomes part of her emotional journey.
The supporting cast was another strong point. Detective Hudson Riley, Renee Birdwhistle and Keno bring different personalities into Neagley’s world. At first, it feels like she is being forced to work with people she would rather avoid, but the team slowly becomes useful. Their interactions also add some humour to the otherwise serious story.
The action is very much in the Reacher style. There are brutal fights, quick decisions, investigations, weapons and moments where Neagley calmly walks into a dangerous situation like she has already calculated every possible outcome.
The difference is that the show feels a little more grounded in mystery and character drama. It is not only about finding the bad guys and beating them up. There is also a personal reason behind Neagley’s investigation, and that makes the case more meaningful.
However, the series does have some weaknesses... The plot can feel familiar. We have seen secret organisations, suspicious deaths, cults, corrupt businessmen and dangerous experiments in many other thrillers.. Some of the twists are also easy to predict if you have watched enough crime shows.
There are moments when the story becomes more complicated than necessary, especially when it begins connecting the cult storyline to the pharmaceutical conspiracy. The show sometimes feels like it is trying to make the mystery deeper than it really is.
I also think some of the supporting characters could have been developed more. They are interesting enough, but the focus remains heavily on Neagley, so a few relationships do not get as much attention as they deserve.
Still, the series works because Maria Sten carries it well. Neagley is not as playful or entertaining as Reacher, but she has a different kind of appeal. She is quiet, disciplined and emotionally damaged, and watching her slowly allow people into her life is just as important as watching her fight criminals.. The connection to Reacher is also handled carefully. Jack Reacher appears, but the show does not completely depend on him. This is Neagley’s story, and that is how it should be.
Overall, Neagley is a solid action mystery with a strong lead performance, good fight scenes and enough emotional material to make it more than just another spin-off.
It may not have the same fun and larger-than-life energy as Reacher, but it has its own identity. If you enjoyed Neagley in the original series, this gives you a better look at who she is when Reacher is not around..
