I first discovered the joy of drawing on the iPad Pro earlier this year, and the only drawing app I even had installed at the time was FiftyThree's Paper. It was, and still is, probably the fastest and most fun app for casual drawing on a tablet.
It's not robust enough to do anything complex, but there's nearly zero learning curve and is instantly gratifying for nearly anyone who's picked it up.
This was the very first complete piece I made on Paper. Because of the lack of layers, it's not great for drawing backgrounds so many of my early cartoons were just floating in space like this. In case you're wondering, this is Laura/X23 from the movie "Logan," and the number in her dialog bubble is the Bitcoin price at the time.
I really enjoyed "Logan" so I spent a whole week just drawing cartoons based on its characters. This Professor X image was the next one I published.
As I got more confident, I took a stab at Logan himself, but I wasn't quite ready to do an action sequence just yet. Instead I thought it'd be funny to show him in a more passive way, just sitting on the coin-operated horse that Laura loved so much in the film.
Here's the last one I did, and it also happens to be the last image I ever drew on Paper. The number of elements in this piece was enough to convince me that I needed a more sophisticated program to do anything of the next pieces. (I eventually ended up moving to ProCreate, and then after that, Sketchbook.)
I loved drawing this and, even nearly a hundred cartoons later, it's still one of my personal favorites. I'm a bit of an art nerd, and I put a lot of thought into the way each character was posed based on their personalities and how they behaved in the movie.
The Wolverine clone on the left is immovable and static, he's basically a killing machine. Meanwhile, Laura is leaping out of the car because she's impulsive and brash, Professor X is desperately holding her back to keep her safe, and old Logan is just trying to stop the whole thing from ending in total disaster. The opposing angles of the three characters in the car is pure chaos.
