The governments primary responsibility is to enforce peace through ultimate threat of power but not encourage it. It is supposed to act on behalf of it's citizens as well as in their best interest.
With such an obvious push back on recent political developments, I can't see the government oppressing for that much longer. Something will break and it might get uglier before it gets prettier.
