Moving to a new town wasn't always easy, but at least I was having quite a lot of fun familiarizing myself with the city and the prospect of meeting new people.
I looked at my phone once more to remind myself it wasn't a hundred percent fun. My mum had called earlier and to say the conversation had been a contest of wills was simply putting it mildly.
The family didn't want me to move and if I was being honest, I was kinda missing home but I'd gotten a great job with a good pay and I wasn't about to let an opportunity to improve my career go to waste.
The company I worked for had gotten a new branch in the nearby town and I was the new head.
Dad wasn't as hostile as mum but it was evident he didn't like me moving as well. The plan had been to eventually join the family business and moving away from home seemed like I'd finally cemented my resolve to forge my own path away from the family business.
They were being too serious about the matter, as I was only about four hours drive away from home.
I was still lost in thought as I walked into the kitchen and reached up into the cupboard for my coffee bag. I grabbed the bag and found nothing.
*Oh sh!# I thought, I'd been running low on coffee as I had to pack in a hurry but was expecting a delivery tomorrow morning. Coffee was the one thing I and mum shared without complaint and she was the one actually sending me a delivery tomorrow.
Tomorrow it is, I sighed as I walked out of the kitchen to my room.
~Next Morning~
I was still in bed when someone knocked on the door of my apartment, so I was forced to go check it out.
It was my neighbor holding a package that was addressed to me, I collected the package and thanked him for bringing it to my door.
I smiled as I unwrapped the package because as much as mum didn't like me moving, she wasn't one to make empty promises.
I was still a little but bothered by her promise on making me regret the move, but I was glad
she at least didn't break her promise on the delivery.
I was already whistling at the sight of freshly ground coffee beans when I felt something fall. It looked like a folded piece of paper and I picked it up to check what was written in it and read the words
HELP ME! I have been stuck in this factory for a decade!
I was confused because our previous orders back home didn't come with any notes and besides the package had been sealed.
There was no address to the note and no name signed, which began a series of questions in my head.
How would anyone be stuck in a factory for a decade? and How did they even get a note into my coffee instead of just calling the cops?
The Cops my brain seemed to run in overdrive, I had to report this to the police Incase someone was in trouble somewhere.
Picking up my phone, I dialed the police.
'Hello, please report your emergency"
"Yeah my name is Jack and I want to report ......" I went on to explain what had happened and my belief that the person could be in danger.
It didn't take long into the conversation to realize I wasn't being taken serious. The operator told me in clear terms I would be arrested if I persisted in playing pranks on police officers and then proceeded to disconnect the call.
Dumbfounded and wondering if I should risk calling again, perhaps I didn't explain the situation clearly. I checked the package again trying to narrow down the factory it must've come from and saw that there were numerous across the country.
It didn't help that I didn't get a name, at least I would've given that information to the police. Still thinking on the next step to take, I heard another knock on my door.
Two people at my door in one morning, I must've hit the lottery for unlimited weekend disturbance.
I opened the door to a delivery guy bringing me what he claimed to be a package containing my coffee. I tried explaining that I'd already gotten my package but he was giving me a funny look that clearly said Yeah I'm not buying your cr谩p.
Still contemplating what was going on, I got a text from my mum
Morning Son, I hope you got your delivery.
I mean both deliveries IYKWIM 馃槣.
Anyway ithought I'd remind you it's April 14, enjoy your coffee
I'd absolutely forgotten it was April 14, which was April fool's day. It explained the reaction I'd gotten from the police earlier and why the delivery guy was giving me a funny look.
My mum had just played the biggest prank on me.
She must've ordered for two packages, tampered with one and resealed the bag and then have them delivered to me separately.
I really was a fool to have fallen for that, I thought as I headed to the kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee.
The only upside to the situation was that I'd gotten two packages instead of one. I wasn't one to hold grudges, but I couldn't wait for the next April 14 to arrive.
Mum 1-0 Jack, I thought as I sipped my morning coffee.
