My experience has taught me that you can be good at something but it may not be what you really want to do. On the the other hand I also feel that there is a big chance that being good at something can make you want to do it even more. I felt that these two aspects of 'being good at something' were necessary to mention before I could answer your question. Now that it's out of the way, here is my answer:

1. Being good at something means that you are able to do a much better job of it than other people around you. Basically you are more than above average in doing this particular thing. So comparing yourself to those doing the same thing will allow you to know if you are good at it or not.

2. Being good at something indicates that you have a knack for that thing and can be indicative of being talented in that particular area. This point is self explanatory.

3. If you are good at something then there is very high chance that people around you will give you indications about it. Obviously you have to be very careful in reading those indications because they can range from compliments to jealously.

4. Usually when you are good at something then you are able to become even better at it, at a much quicker rate. As an example consider something that you are bad at. Then there is chance that you would have a slightly harder time becoming proficient at it. Being good at something would simply make your progress at becoming better at it slightly easier. It doesn't mean that you wouldn't have to work hard. It simply means that your returns for your hard work can be greater.

5. To find out what you are good at cannot be left to a chance encounter with that particular thing. Sometimes you will have to do a lot of trial and errors before you can come across that one thing that you can shine at.

6. If you already know what you are good at then consider yourself blessed!

7. Being good at something doesn't mean being the best. The difference between 'good' and 'best' can be huge. This world is a big place and arrogance can lead to bad decisions (just a reminder from my own experience)

8. Last but not the least - It is important to remember that being good at something doesn't really mean that you want to do that for life or do it as a job or even like doing it at all. So if you find something that you are good at and you like doing it as well, then you are one lucky person :-)

Apparently Carrie Fisher wasn't a big fan of her own role of being princess Leia, something she was quite adept at!
