There are some places that look completely normal during the day but become something else entirely at night, a house can look beautiful in the afternoon, with flowers around the compound, clean windows, and children playing outside but once darkness falls, even the same house can make people uncomfortable, funny enough, nobody can explain why? .... there was an old house at the end of a quiet street in a small community.... the building had been there for as long as anybody could remember, it had a very rusty gate, broken windows, and a huge mango tree standing in front of it and the walls were covered with dark patches and the roof made strange noises whenever the wind blew....

Nobody lived there anymore....

According to the elders in the community, the house once belonged to a wealthy businessman who had lived there with his wife and two children, they were happy family, or at least that was what people did believed and they had plenty money, good clothes, and everything that made their neighbours admire them.....

Then one night, something terrible happened....

The entire family disappeared, some people claimed they travelled without informing anybody, others said the businessman had been involved in something dangerous and was forced to run away, but the strangest part was that their belongings remained inside the house, olates were still in the kitchen, clothes were hanging inside the wardrobes, and a family photograph remained on the sitting room wall.

Nobody ever saw them again....

As the years passed, strange stories began to spread around that people claimed they heard children laughing inside the empty building at midnight.... some said they saw a woman standing beside the mango tree, wearing a white dress, before disappearing into thin air, others swore they heard somebody knocking on the gate when there was nobody outside it.

But of course, not everybody did believed these stories.... there were always people who thought the whole thing was nonsense, and one evening, three young men decided to prove that the stories were nothing but village rumours,... they had spent the evening drinking and making fun of the people who refused to go near the house and before they knew it, they had challenged one another to enter the building and spend thirty minutes inside there....
The first two refused when they reached the gate, the third, who had been laughing the loudest, decided to show them that he was not afraid of it... so he pushed the gate open,... It made a loud, horrible sound that echoed through the compound....the air inside was unusually cold, even though the weather outside was hot, dry leaves covered the ground, and the mango tree moved gently despite the fact that there was barely any wind,he switched on his phone torch and entered into the house, everything was covered in plenty dust, old furniture stood in the sitting room, cobwebs hanging from the ceiling,... he walked past the dining area and entered a narrow passage leading to the bedrooms...

That was when he heard it.....

A little girl laughing, he stopped immediately....

The sound came from one of the bedrooms, he tried to convince himself that it was probably a cat or another animal hiding inside the building, but then the laughter came again, followed by three soft knocks from behind the bedroom door.

He wanted to leave, but curiosity kept him standing there, he slowly pushed the door open....

The room was empty except for an old wooden bed and a wardrobe, his torch moved across the walls until it landed on a family photograph hanging above the bed.

Something about the photograph looked strange, the faces of the businessman, his wife, and their two children were covered in thick black marks. All except one.

The little girl....

Her face was clear, and she was smiling directly at him.

Suddenly, his phone switched off, the room went completely dark.....

He heard footsteps moving around him, followed by the sound of a door slamming somewhere in the house, then a small voice whispered close to his ear.

"Why did you come back?"

He screamed and ran.....

He stumbled through the passage, knocked over a chair, and rushed out through the front door, his friends were waiting outside, laughing at him until they saw his face, he was shaking so badly that he could barely explain what had happened.

They left immediately....

The next morning, some residents went to inspect the house, ....they found the front door open and the old photograph lying on the floor.

But that was not the strangest discovery, fresh footprints covered the dusty floor of the bedroom, there were four sets of small footprints leading from the wardrobe to the door.

And one set of adult footprints leading in the opposite direction.

Nobody entered that house again.

Even today, people who pass the street after dark claim they sometimes see a light moving behind the broken windows, occasionally, they hear children laughing beneath the mango tree.

The house remains empty, but the stories have never stopped....

Maybe the whole thing is just a collection of rumours passed from one generation to another, maybe there is a reasonable explanation for everything that happened.

But one thing is certain, some places are better left alone, especially when nobody can explain what goes on inside them, after all, not every closed door needs to be opened, and not every strange sound needs an investigation, sometimes, the smartest thing to do is simply mind your business and go home.
