It reminded me of the "Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, omega" school of thought about personality types. I spent a little time trying to track this down to its root origins in psychology only to end up in a dead end in this hunting article about the behavior patterns of white tail deer -- perhaps that is truly its origin:

Idea being: dolphins would be gammas. Independent, might fight or might withdraw, but alphas don't mess with them because they are way more dangerous than any other social type.
Socially I'm a dolphin/gamma. Apparently, at least for deer, this really only represents about 5% of the population.
Seems to me these are the people to whom Libertarianism appeals. And these are the folks that proliferate and thrive when there is an open frontier, because they are folks who prefer to speak with actions rather than words, and since they are most comfortable with an independent role anyway, are not at all intimidated by the frontier requirement to take their lives into their own hands.
But if they really only represent 5% of the human population, then it also might explain why Libertarianism will never achieve more than a sprinkling of flavor in human society.
