The Kaw indians of the Great Plains.
“The Kansa are a stout, hardy, handsome race, more active and enterprising even than the Osage. They are noted for their bravery and heroic daring.”
After breaking off from the other Dhegiha and Osage, the Kaw decided on a spot on the Missouri river in northeastern Kansas. Originally coming from the Ohio valley.
They relied heavily on buffalo hunting and even moved to the Kansas river to what is now Manhattan. They did this to keep up with the herds of buffalo. They also would frequently trade furs with the french for weapons, clothing, and food.
“The Kaw would continue to be regarded as conservative and resistant to change.” They are a stubborn tribe and would always retain their old ways.
The Kaw’s life on the Great Plains was a rough but exciting one. Gone for 6 months of the year chasing buffalo herds and living in teepees. Having intense heroic battle with other tribes. Then they would go live in their “town”, for the other 6 months, Winter. Which consisted of log cabins and huts. They also seemed to always be at peace with the Osage.
