No doubt one of the most famous sites in Southern Iceland is a DC-3 aircraft crash site. Many people want to see it with their own eyes and of course, photographers love this place.
DC-3 was a cargo aircraft and the US navy operated it. The plane crashed there on November 21st, 1973. No one knows exactly what went wrong and they had to make a crash landing. There were 7 crew members on board and none of them got hurt. Lucky accident.
The plane is not expected to stay there forever. Sólheimasandur is a glacial outwash plain, meaning when there is an eruption underneath the glacier Mýrdalsjökull, there is a chance floodwater could wash it away.
Going there is a bit of a hike. It's about 4 kilometers of walking from the parking lot. When the wind is very intense, it is not recommended to go there because you will get sandblasted. People have died on this trail previously.
Otherwise, it's really cool to see a landscape like this, for many many kilometers there is nothing. Just a huge open sand field.
