I have decided to share some of my views about some Kdramas(Korean melodramas) or even Kpop(Korean pop music). I've actually wanted to do this for awhile, but I'm not anyone professional in the field. I am simply a consumer. My product is mainly Kdramas. I discovered them not from fans, but from Hulu. It showed them and Hulu was free to watch at the time. I was so incredibly bored with U. S. stuff, that I thought I'd give it a try. Now mind you, I had seen one Kdrama that my father wanted me to watch for a long time. It's considered a classic in Korea. "Jewel in the Palace" in english, Dae Jang Geum in Korean 대장금. I don't speak Korean(Hangul). But of course I am going to learn at some point.
Anyway, it didn't make me want to watch more, but it was there and I kept seeing it and well, so I clicked on something. And whoa, I became addicted! The acting was fabulous, the storyline was intriguing and it showed such a different culture and a different way of life. Korea was all ready interesting to me, but to watch a drama kind of gave me a more personal feel.
Alot of people will tell you, especially Koreans, that it isn't representational. Korea itself is not like the dramas they say. But I think that really depends on what you focus on. There are things that are VERY Korean on there. How do I know? I've checked around, asked others that have been there, Koreans themselves. And be clear, Korea is not necessarily an easy place. People misunderstand the history and anguish that many Koreans go thru. Simply because they are not Korean and haven't grown up as a Korean.
That aside, I've seen many, many Kdramas and maybe I'll talk about some of them. But for now, I'm looking at a Kdrama that is coming up tomorrow. It is the "Korean version of Criminal Minds". I have not, in fact, watched the original Criminal Minds, because I basically don't watch TV. And to watch these things, you gotta pay money. Welp, Kdramas, you don't generally, although that is changing rapidly.
I thought about going to watch the U.S. version first, but then I thought, no, it will be interesting for me to have no prejudice about how it should look and just see it as a body of work on it's own.
So when I find "Criminal Minds" korean version with english subtitles, I'll say what I think.....staaaaaaaayyyy tuned! haha!
NOTE: I decided not to share what I think of that show. I don't think I'll be watching it. Scratch that. I'll pick another one.
