As I have said I love drawing fantasy and want to continue and expand my drawing abilities. Drawing is one of those things that is always a learning curve.
This is My Escaping Werewolf
When drawing him I imagined a scenario where a dangerous Werewolf was locked in the dungeon (somewhere in a mysterious kingdom) ... but due to many of my thoughts lately, maybe he is a heroic freedom fighter!
Then Yey!
Here he is finished!
Let's Start With Part One - The Structure!
In one post I will be showing you how I built the structure little by little. I would love to see if people wanted to draw him - that would be awesome. I don't mind if Steemians want to draw him and post! Please do give me credit steemit@granblock as this is original artwork right out of my head. I made this with sketches a while ago.
Start with the really light shape of his head, and notice in the centre I have a line of motion. This gives me an idea of how I want my figure to move.
I have added a large oval for a man's chest. Now I sketched the "approximate" location and position of the arms and legs.
Next added muscle in the neck and starting to build out the arms. Finishing the shape and position of the arms as well, and then sketched in the torso shapes. Remember when drawing not to think about lines but shapes. Sometimes people make the mistake of trying to outline - it's much better to build with shapes.
This next drawing (if I recall) was when I decided he was going to be a were... I added a facial structure that gives him a snout and mouth like a wolf. Notice that I haven't perfectly used the original line, remember idiosyncrasies in your drawing gives it realism and character. Let yourself go with wherever the drawing wants to go.
Actually, I find that makes it a lot more fun - never know what it will look like. Also, remember you can use reference material. For instance in this stage of the drawing you can look up drawings of wolves to get a face you like, or a t rex or whatever. That is how you use reference material by taking an idea and getting your own inspiration and checking realistic details. But... you don't have to - many great fantasy and scifi artists make creatures that have nothing to do with reality!
Wanted to point out that often artists will look at their image (doesn't it look dorky at this stage) and get mad at themselves and tear it up. Don't - you are sketching and you can always work up the drawing. Trust in your process. It will look a lot better if you finish. (Not that all are masterpieces but at least you finished something)
This next drawing is where I decided this guy needed a lot more muscle bulging. So from some simple anatomy pics you can build the shape of muscles. This was great fun!
I also starting sketching in his abs. Now... I don't know if you noticed but there is one huge mistake I made in his torso - can you see it?
I didn't notice until much later in the drawing.
Started giving him some hair and playing with teeth
Okay, this is the last drawing in this post. I promise I will be posting the next some time tonight er... or tomorrow morning early.
What I have done here is added the feature of the huge club or stick he is carrying (I don't know it just sort of happened) built out the muscle shapes of the arms , filled out the hair (or fur) a bit, shaped his hands some more ( oh yeah another error I made that never got fixed), the chain, and oh... gave him an interesting loin cloth - tarzanish!
That was the structure and the next post will have the shading - yum!
So... love to see some of this drawing coming along, and I will get the rest of this guy ready for posting tonight - hopefully - tomorrow morning at the latest.
Enjoy
Happy drawing!
