As a Dutchman I cannot hold back this new coin design with a painting of a famous Dutch painter Vermeer.
First let us look at the painting which is displayed in The Hague in the Mauritshuis (go there! also Van Goghs)
Experts now say the Pearl is no pearl as shape and size do not match a pearl. The old name of the painting was the girl with the tulband. It was a so called Tronie which is a study of a face. No name of the model was registered for a study. The use of the light is what makes it a masterpiece. He made a lot of paintings with light form a window like this one:
