They say nostalgia is proof that one's life was lived with a certain joy. I discovered this song on the days when I mostly went on morning walks with my uncle; as much as it holds one of my favourite moments spent with him, the lyrics had another impact.

I didn't get to relate to it until I put myself back in the position I hated so much, and it corresponds with when she said, "The feeling felt so familiar." The feeling of yearning for someone who doesn't feel the same but needs you to be there; remembering how drained I would have been if I had stayed any longer brings me to the lyrics where she says, "I am who I need to forgive."

Forgiving myself and recognizing that, inasmuch as these people had their manipulative sides, I also had a chance of working out on them, but I chose to stay. I had to stop blaming myself for the decisions I made; forgiving myself as much as I forgave them made the damage lighter.

Another line I could relate to was learning the same lesson over and over, always getting involved with men who didn't hold my interest at heart.

It did feel like I was 16 again, because that was the first time I got involved in such shenanigans, and at this age I still couldn't make the right decisions, and I let myself get hurt again.
"I am opening wounds for the closure" is another line that got me, because I had vowed not to try again, and each emotional drain from now on got me thinking of my past hurts.
The lyrics got me through that phase because I felt there was someone who could relate to everything I felt; it was like she drafted them for me. I got to hate myself less and worked towards not repeating these decisions.

I got to leave them, reminding myself that people don't change as they grow older; that no matter how long you wait for them to see things differently, it was nearly impossible, and you had rather just move on and start over instead.

PS; My first post here and I am open to correction or how well to get through it thank you.
