When the cows arrived in late June, we were told the big cow was pregnant, due any time. So each time she got bigger, then her udder got swollen, etc. my husband would say “anytime now”. But weeks went by. It got to be a joke in the neighborhood.
Then on August 31st he found the newborn calf, a heifer, out there in the morning. They had moved over to the 10 acre piece and the grass and weeds were REALLY tall due to the cows late arrival and all the heat and rain.
The momma cow just has not filled out, even with the surplus of grass we have. I don’t like seeing them so thin at this time of year.
The calf has markings very similar to her mom.
This calf has become very adept at hiding in the grass and weeds, just like a fawn. Sometimes it take my husband ½ hour to find her. Because the interior fencing is temporary, the calf can get under the strands and he often finds her in adjoining sections.
The rest of the herd on the 10 acre piece
The momma cow is relatively friendly and will let my husband rub her head. He started patting the calf when it was born, and it tolerates it. So he’s happy now, he has cows AND a calf.
