Hello, dear creative community, I hope this post finds you well. It's another day to get busy and make something beautiful,

And this time, I made a simple and beautiful gathered dress for an elderly neighbour of mine, whom we all like to call grandma, because she is indeed a grandma to us all, as she advises us young mothers, plays with the kids and tells us stories of the past, being her company is always exciting as there is never a dull moment with her.

So you can imagine how sad and worried we all were when she was down with an ailment two weeks back, thankfully, with the support, prayers, and outpouring of love from everyone here, grandma is back on her feet, full of health. To celebrate this feat of good health, I thought to surprise her with a simple and beautiful gathered dress, made from ankara fabric.

Which I'm sure she will love. So without further ado, let's get right into the making process.

Cutting And Sewing Process

  • First, I cut out the upper basic bodice pattern of the dress, giving it a round neckline with a depth of about 5 inches.

  • Then I proceeded to cut out the back bodice pattern as well.

  • Moving on, I turned the upper bodice pattern with its lining piece, turning the neckline and the sides, and I also held in the darts.

  • Before cutting the lower part of the dress, I multiplied her waist measurement by 3, which was the width of the base of the dress that needed to be gathered.

  • I also fixed the zipper to the back of the dress

  • Continuing, I gathered the base and joined it to the upper side of the dress, around the waistline.

  • For the sleeves, I cut out a basic elbow-length sleeve and a gathered sleeve, which I joined together before sewing them around both armhole areas of the dress.
