One of the best moments in life is becoming a parent, the feeling is exhilarating, having a new life handed to you, they become your world, and you want to do everything within your means to give them the best of life, with these responsibilities, training the right way also become paramount so they can become responsible adults tomorrow.
A lot of touts and other irresponsible adults we have in our society today are mostly the results of bad parenting, children copy a lot, and as the adage goes charity begins at home, most of what they learn either good or bad starts from the parents, the way we talk, things we do and all. It is paramount for parents to act rightly in front of their children.
Taking responsibilities early
I grew up in a caring home with my mum, dad, siblings and some other extended family members also lived with us, I guess due to this, my parent, my dad especially didn't allow us to learn how to cook early enough, even as teens, he would always complain of how we were too small to be in the kitchen, he wouldn't allow anyone except my mum prepare the meal, also some house chores like washing of our clothes were done for us. This kind of affected us later, although my mum never relented in teaching us, we were always forming lazy, because we knew dad was there to defend us. Leaving our parent house at some point either due to school or during holidays with our cousins, made us learn the hard way as females to learn how to do these things, some of us are married now, and I'm glad we eventually learn these things before and after marriage. You will hear my husband bragging once in a while about how he taught me how to make some delicious meals during courtship.
My first daughter is five, I have started teaching her to wash her plates after meals, with my supervision of course, also she helps once in a while to wash her socks during laundry, she is not that good yet as I still help in putting the final touch to the washing. I plan on teaching her how to cook earlier too, probably from the age of ten.
Visiting and Staying at relatives' houses
I guess due to the traumatic experience I had with a pedophile while I visited one of our relative's houses during one holiday, has made me now as a parent not allow my children to stay over at a relative's house, especially uncles, I don't have an iota of trust for any, my parent allowed me as a child, but I can't allow my children. As my daughters grow older some teachings will include no sitting down on any uncle's lap even a teacher in school, nobody calls you my wife, etc trust me I have had enough experience on this to give a full lecture, post for another day.
Being disciplined and friendly
My parent were lenient in terms of discipline, they are not the harsh type, I can sit with them and say how I felt without any fear, not that I don't respect them, the moral upbringing was there, and this act made me not to hide anything from them, especially my mum, when I had my first boyfriend, I told her about my crush and his I was going to accept to be his girlfriend, she advised me and told me to invite him home, which I did, I guess it made my boyfriend be at ease and took me seriously we later ended up married, I like to think that my mother involvement made it work out. As a parent now, I would want my daughter to be able to tell me anything without fear, so I can advise her the right way. I would be disciplined like my parent and still have a balance by being friends with my children.
There is a lot to write but I'm still on the journey of discovering myself as a parent so I will be stopping here for now. Hope you enjoyed your stay on my blog.
