Yax was a fifty-year-old man who had been searching all his life for the ideal soulmate. He met many beautiful, intelligent, and admirable women, but every time he started a relationship, something would come up and it always ended badly. Thus, time passed and his failed relationships accumulated. Despite this, he continued his search, but without expecting something grandiose.
When he was young, he met Paulina, a beautiful lawyer with golden hair that seemed to shine brighter than the sun and a walk that disarmed anyone. That woman stole his mind.
The encounter happened in a movie theater line to see Terminator. He was alone and about to buy his ticket when the girl took him by the arm and asked him to please buy one for her by handing him the money. She knew what she was doing, using her charms to avoid the line, and Yax fell for her. They ended up talking, watching the movie, and later, under the sheets. Time later, everything ended.
While having drinks in a tavern with friends, they introduced him to Mónica, a light-skinned woman with killer legs, not because she practiced martial arts, but because they were beautiful. Mónica was an industrial engineer, and they got along very well because they had a lot in common professionally. They went out, traveled, and it also ended.
One day, while he was moving to his new apartment, Yax saw a redhead pass by on the sidewalk across the street that caught his attention. He stopped what he was doing and followed her gaze until he saw her enter a hair salon. Nothing more happened, and he went back to what he was doing.
Days passed in his new residence, and every time he went out, he saw the "carrot" (that's how he started calling her) pass by, and the girl always entered the hair salon. He deduced that she worked there.
He wanted to meet her, but at the same time, he didn't want to be so obvious, so he had no choice but to cut his hair at the hair salon. The problem was that he never saw gentlemen enter the hair salon, only ladies. He didn't back down and tried it.
He entered the salon, looked for the carrot with his eyes, found her, and approached her, explaining that he couldn't find a barbershop nearby to cut his hair and wanted to know if they could cut it. The girl smiled and told him that they didn't cut men's hair, but that she would make an exception for him.
Yax felt victorious; he had achieved a first contact. The conversation while he was getting his hair cut was about the mystery of how Yax didn't notice that right next to the hair salon there was a barbershop. Yax felt exposed and embarrassed.
He got over that ridiculous experience and now had to find reasons to talk to Yudel (the carrot) again, his hair wasn't going to grow overnight. So he started passing by the hair salon every day, in the morning, and at the end of the afternoon. He hunted the carrot, entrance time, exit time, lunch, everything, everything.
He provoked several encounters and invited the carrot to go out, to drink coffee, to the movies, to walk, etc. He bet on performing some antics to steal smiles from her, but the girl was just that, smiles, and never accepted the invitations. This drove him crazy.
But the worst part wasn't that, Yax had become so fixated on the carrot that no other girl caught his attention. It seemed that every rejection from the carrot was a motivation to search for strategies to achieve his goal, but that goal was getting further and further away. It was something similar to the song by singer Arjona.
Yax got tired and decided not to look for her anymore. He came to the conclusion that he would never make the carrot notice him, so he decided to continue with his solitary life.
A week after his decision, on a Saturday afternoon, gathered with some friends, he received a call on his mobile phone from an unknown number. As a habit, he never answered calls from unknown numbers, but that day he answered without looking at the phone screen.
It was the voice of a woman who identified herself as Yudel. The effects of the drinks wore off on the man, he got up from his chair and scared the present ones because he turned pale. It seemed that he would have a syncope.
The carrot greeted them with some words saying that she missed his insistence. The perseverance had borne fruit.
They arranged a date, got to know each other, and their relationship grew so much that they became formal boyfriends in the sight of friends and family.
Several years passed, and the love they expressed was full of quality and intensity until one day the carrot decided to end the relationship. Yax felt devastated; she had dealt him the most painful blow of his life, and he didn't see it coming.
He had strived for Yudel, fought like few others to maintain the relationship, had behaved very well, and suddenly she didn't want anything more; what was happening?
It happened that Yudel had expressed to Yax on several occasions that she wanted to take the relationship seriously. That she wanted marriage, and Yax didn't give a satisfactory answer to the carrot's request. Moreover, he didn't give any answer, always evading the subject or making an excuse to leave.
Yudel came to the conclusion that Yax didn't want to get married, that he didn't have her in a serious concept, with a common future. That didn't work for her; she wanted a man committed to her, the family, the house, and even a puppy. The relationship died.
Years later, they met again. Yax realized that Yudel had changed; she was a very well-planted, successful woman, and she looked happy. She also saw him changed, lonely, with a sad and empty look.
She had managed to love herself, the heartbreak that Yax caused her greatly propelled her. In contrast, he continued his same life full of trivialities, lack of love, and commitment.
He wanted to reconquer, but she expressed that she no longer loved him, that she estimated him as someone who estimates a friend. That she had him as a pleasant memory, but nothing more.
They both said goodbye with a smile, but behind Yax's smile, there was immense pain that ate away at him until death.
Love makes us feel alive, it gives us strength to fight for someone who complements us, but heartbreak is the essence that makes us discover self-love.
