A weekend without a device; won't it be the end of the world?
$10k is quite a lot of money for me and it would go a long way in sorting out some financial needs. The thought of what I can achieve with the money didn't make me hesitate to jump on @galenkp weekend challenge.
MY CHOICE -You have no computer, mobile phone or gaming console for the entire weekend. Write at least 350 words about how you feel and why and how you handle having no devices to occupy yourself with.
Of course, why wouldn't I be able to spend the weekend without any device for $10k. I can even spend the whole week for that prize because there are whole lots of things I engage with to keep me alive for that period.
This shouldn't be as tough as it may sound but my obsession with my devices would make things pretty difficult. My device has become my closes companion in recent years, I won't deny the fact that I wake up to it and it is the last thing I interact with before going to bed.
I am not a social media addict and I barely spend time chatting but my engagement on Hive and other similar platforms wouldn't just make the weekend with my devices possible.
Doing away with my device for the weekend means I won't be able to participate in the weekend engagement challenge and the Hive learners creative Sunday initiative which are contests I can't do without every weekend.
Aside from my engagement on different platforms that add value to me in a lot of ways, I would be fine without my device but in a situation where something juicy is involved, I can go through the weekend without a device.
Coping with the weekend without a device.
Things are hard until we get into it and I think the weekend without a device will go smoothly for me. There are lots of things I can keep myself busy with that won't make me miss my devices too much over the weekend.
Football
Every weekend for me is always about football, watching various football leagues across the world is enough to keep me alive throughout the weekend. I have three siblings who love sports just like I do, and I won't get bored watching and discussing football with them over the weekend.
I usually don't engage too much online every weekend because of football so that one thing can keep me occupied for quite some time over the weekend.
I am a Liverpool fan and we are hosting Arsenal this weekend at Anfield. This match is a big one to talk about because it would decide the future of both clubs and I am sure we will spend some time digging out previous matches and predicting the outcome of the encounter.
Movie.
I started watching a Korean series recently but my engagement online prevents me from flowing well with the movie and I still have a lot of episodes to see so putting my devices away will allow watching as many episodes as I like.
I easily get bored with movies but they should keep me occupied for some time. It would be awesome if I go to the cinema, at least I wouldn't sleep off while watching the screen.
Playing games
Games aren't what they use to be anymore. Before the existence of smartphones, we have games we played but our devices have made us forsake them.
I have Ludo at home and it will be fun competing with my siblings again like we use to do when we were younger. I haven't played it for a while and I am certain that I will be trashed well before I get back in shape with the game, the defeats won't matter since it is just for the weekend.
Cooking
I love cooking a lot and I will be doing something new in the kitchen. I will get a recipe book and try new recipes over the weekend.
It would be fun and I will be giving my family something new for the weekend.
Sleep.
My devices keep me awake a lot because I do give myself targets with my online engagement and it is usually difficult for me to sleep without completing the targets. Having my phone away will definitely give me time to rest and I will be sleeping for a long time over the weekend.
My phone is my alarm and it won't be there to wake me in the morning, that will be really fantastic for me.
As easy as this might sound, I am certain I would think about my phone countless times before the weekend is over but just putting my devices away for the weekend won't make the world end.
Once in a while, I take a day off my device when I feel like I am pushing myself too hard with my online engagement. A day to relax keeps me refreshed and full of energy to continue with my engagement online.
Please note that the $10k mentioned in the article has nothing to do with the contest, it was just a trick to motivate myself.
