A Garden Update Missive From Before The Onslaught
As I took my nightly meander through my garden, my eyes were assaulted with a sign of the impending doom of any little morsel of free time I might have thought about enjoying.
My zucchini plants had baby zukes on them.
Not that I have tons of free time lurking about, but once zucchini harvest hits full swing, let’s just say I tend to spend a good chunk of my day tending to preserving the high yielding squash.
Of course I’m not complaining. Zucchini is one of my favorite foods due to its high yielding nature. I also adore foods that work well in both savory and sweet preparations. Some of my favorite zucchini recipes are pineapple zucchini bread, zucchini salsa, and zucchini lasagna. Drat. Now I’m hungry...
This year has been a bit of a strange one in the growing season department, but if my zucchini yield is anything like my snow pea yield then I am going to be one happy homesteader. I’m still picking, blanching, and freezing around 5 pounds of peas every other day, and that’s not counting the peas I’m giving away to neighbors, family, and friends!
Honestly though, I’m not too frightened of the impending zucchini harvest, for I learned my lesson years ago and only have four plants. It’s the 75 incredibly vigorous tomato plants that have me a little concerned. I’ve got the equivalent of a hedgerow tomato fence growing out in my garden, and it’s got me wondering just how many people I know for bestowing the tomato wealth reasons.
On the bright side, I should get done with the tomatoes just in time to deal with the pumpkins, because yep, they are about as insane in their growth rate as everything else right now.
You know what though, right now instead I’d fretting about future veg work, I’m going to kick back in my hammock and enjoy my book and the breeze. I think I better enjoy a bit of R and R while I can...
