FINALLY!
That is what I yelled when I hopped out of bed and beheld the winter wonderland scene that lay beyond my window. We finally got enough snow that I could bust out the snowshoes!
Seriously, I have been having some major withdrawals. I absolutely adore snowshoeing! Me and the trusty corg tend to snowshoe a mile or two most days during the winter months, and since snow is usually a feature not a rarity in these parts from November-March, well, I usually get plenty of snowshoeing time.
But not this year. Nay! The year of the El Nino means mild and no snow, and to quote Gollum, WE HATES IT!
Apparently my laments have been heard, because holy wow are we ever getting the snow! Between yesterday and today we have racked up between 7-8" and tomorrow a storm is supposed to be rolling in that is forecasted to have about a foot or more in store for us.
SQUEE!
What's not so squee is that some fifty mile an hour winds are on that storm's heels. Plus the meteorologists are throwing around the words Bomb Cyclone. Eee.
One day I will recount our family's experience with a bomb cyclone in El Paso, Texas on Fort Bliss while staying in our travel trailer. My kids still reminisce about the time of the flying objects and how we had to park our one ton truck in front of the trailer because the hurricane force winds were moving the trailer. Good times.
So yes, when I hear the words bomb cyclone uttered I pay attention. A windstorm on the heels of a huge dumpening of snow is something to be heeded indeed.
That and the subarctic air on the heels of that.
So yep, we are going to get winter all in one week.
It's okay though, because I got firewood for the stove, fuel for the generators and the tractor, a ton of food, and most of all, plenty of books from the library just in case we get snowed in.
Cozy status achieved!
So, back to the snowshoeing. Yesterday, around noon, I strapped my trusty snowshoes to my feet and headed out into the flurry. I also might have inhaled a few snow flakes up my nostrils at times, but here's the thing, I love wandering aimlessly through a snowfall. There's just something so wonderful about tromping through the forest while the snow flits down from the sky. The corg following in my tracks. Yes, she let's me break all the trail, isn't she a peach?
I didn't see too much animal sign, and as it was still storming a bit I didn't expect too, just some wild rabbit tracks. Cora bounded over to them, sniffed the marks a bunch, and then rolled excitedly in a section of the tracks. I just smiled because at least it wasn't turkey poop, she sure does love rolling in that stuff. Ugh.
I had my headphones on for a bit while I trekked and might have been all smiles as I belted out a few tunes too. Like I said in the title of this post, it's a revue.
Thankfully there was no comedy elements to my outing, although one time I did have to balance precariously, remove one boot, and pull up my failing boot sock. I don't know about you all, but I hate getting blisters on the back of my heel, and have learned the hard way that I shouldn't ignore slipping socks.
After working up a good sweat roaming throughout my back woods, the corg and I tromped home. I spent the rest of the day in an elated state, for finally, after it being at least a month overdue, I got to snowshoe!
And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's been on plenty of snowshoe treks in its existence iPhone.
