I live in Honduras, which is a third world country. When I first joined Steemit I of course had serious doubts about it, well, at least you know the making money out of it part, because you see even if I did make enough Steem to make it worthwhile to cash out I could see no way of converting it to some fiat currency which I could exchange for my country's money. So that is one of the reasons I didn't put in much effort I really saw it as a pipe dream to make money here.
But eventually I found out about Blocktrades and Localbitcoins, so Ifigured I would give it a try, I made all the steps and eventually I had Bitcoin in localbitcoin, now to try to sell it. I found a guy from Idaho who needed around $400.00 worth of BTC ASAP so I contacted him and we made the deal. And yes, the next day I had $370.00 at Western Union. Of course I had to trust this guy because I sent the money the night before and all I could do was track the money order on the Western Union site, it was there but I knew he could reverse the payment. But the guy was Ok and I got the money and I knew Steemit was legit, it is hard money but you can really get it in your hands, a big difference for me who had never been able to cash out any money from an online source.
I then had another transaction for about $250.00 and this time I found a guy from San Pedro Sula buying Bitcoin, and he paid directly to a bank account, I didn't have an account at that bank but my son has so I proceeded with the transation, which was another success. I was getting good at this my only problem was I couldn't make enough Steem. Then the guy from San Pedro who actually is from the US gave me his phone number and BTC wallet and told me if I had any more to sell to contact him directly, therefore saving on fees so I have been doing that since then.
Of course this year I have sold nothing because I want to get to minnow status at least and besides the price is so low I feel I would be a fool to sell any Steem at this moment as I have a feeling the price will eventually go up.
Then this guy asked me to join a Honduran Whatsapp Crypto group which I did, but actually it wasn't such a good experience I just found a lot of people losing money and still wanting you to follow their indications so I quit.
But this did open my eyes to BItcoin in this country, the newspapers hardly ever run news about it, I talk with lots of people and none of them have ever heard of it. While I was working I introduced Steemit to several work mates and they did join, they never did go very far though all of them tried it once or twice and gave up when the money didn't start to pour in. So I just decided not to introduce any more people, it just wasn't worth it.
But today I was shooting some pool at my usual place, they had the radio on, and surprisingly there was an advertisement for Bitcoin, that made me notice and I heard a short explanation about what BTC is, that there are people here who are buying and that it is starting to interest some people around here. Unfortunately they gave a Cell Phone contact number but I didn't catch it.
So I guess Crypto is really coming alive if even Honduras is jumping in on the opportunity.
