And I'll be honest the dog that you are referring to sounds like Great Pyrenees. And they actually prefer solitude and to be outside and will refuse to come in. Since there are no threats to protect from and no sheep to herd, the only thing left is exploring and checking things out.

Trust me if that dog was starving everybody would know. About all you can do is just chalk it up two dog being a dog and scoring some free snacking between is meals.
