Urine is made up of a bunch of different compounds including calcium, potassium and sodium amongst other things. If the levels of any of these particles gets too high or if your urine becomes too acidic of basic, they will lump together and crystallize. These crystals will grow over time and form a hardened mass or stone. Kidney stones can hang out undetected for quite a while, that is until they start to move, at which point their pointy edges will scratch along your urinary tract. Passing a kidney stone has been described as one of the most painful experiences ever. The pain is often accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and unsurprisingly pain while urinating. You will also likely have severe pain in your side and back below the rib. In some cases the stone may get stuck in your urinary tract causing infections or complications that may require surgery
In some cases they can pass on their own with the help of some water and painkillers. Or, you just might need to ride a roller coaster. Urological surgeon David Wartinger conducted a study and found that the centripetal force of roller coasters helped pass the stones. After hearing supportive anecdotal evidence, Dr. Wartinger used a model kidney and kidney stone to test his theory. A stone was counted as passed if it moved from a lodged location to where the kidney meets the ureter.
