Steem is a community; We all get that I think...It's a group of people all hanging out sharing experiences, opinions and knowledge plus everything in between. If you're here reading this you're part of the community, and have probably interacted with me in some way; If you haven't, then why not?

Here in Adelaide, South Australia we take community to a different level...

For the last two years a group of steemians from Adelaide have been meeting in person each month for a more social and interactive experience. I won't tag any of them but if you have attended a steem meet in Adelaide, or elsewhere, please feel free to comment here and talk about your experiences.

Thanks to mattclarke@mattclarke, who arranged the first steem meet up BBQ two years ago, the group has met monthly at the Jade, on Flinders Street in the city, on the last Thursday of each month with the latest meet up taking place only last week. It had been a couple months since I last went but I was pleased to see some 13 people there which, after 2 years, I think is a pretty good effort. I'm not sure what the highest attendance has been but at a guess maybe 20 or so, with maybe more attending the BBQ's we have held in other locations. I think it's a pretty decent effort.

I haven't been to every one as commitments often take me elsewhere although I've been to many and have enjoyed the conversations and more personal-nature of face to face communication. It's all quite civilised really - Matt puts his credit card on the bar so we can all enjoy a beverage or two, thanks for that Matty, much appreciated, and we talk about steem, past, present and future, and life itself. There's no agenda, just free-form socialising. It's kind of cool.

I'm not sure however I'm going to take a punt and say that our meet up is the longest-running meetup in the world...Well done #mallsballers! (This makes reference to the iconic sculpture in Adelaide'r CBD shopping mall, called (the Mall's Balls as pictured.)

Last week I met a new guy called ctrpch@ctrpch who has been on steem since about April 2019 I think; We have never previously met in person, but interacted a little on steem.

We were chatting about content creation last Thursday as he has not really posted much, and then it was mainly Splinterlands focused as it is an interest of his.

I am a big believer in the thought that engagement will carry steem forward and for engagement to occur people will need to create content. I, myself, am a content creator having little else other than my mind and ability to write some words to offer steem. We were chatting about how to create content, keep it interesting and consistent and ctrpch@ctrpch seemed to come away from the conversation with the intent to post a little more which is great.

Of course, posting isn't for everyone however from my perspective, someone who has gained a lot of enjoyment out of posting, I tend to lean towards it being a positive thing. Like I said, if no one posted content where would steem be?

I'm hoping to see some posts eventuate from that user, but if not then I'm sure we'll catch up at another steem meet up in the near future, swap stories and hang out.

One thing I am very focused on, and that I hold as valuable for new users trying to build a presence and brand here is...Engagement. That's right, engagement.

It's the fastest way to get noticed and to build a recognisable brand here. It's really easy to do also; Just read someone's post and comment with interest and validity, then respond if they reply. That's it. People like me, those who create content often value the engagement a post receives more than the actual steem-reward...It's a social network after all. Engaging with people will help new users expand their network and word of mouth is a powerful brand-builder here in my opinion. Remember the older, and larger accounts often talk off-platform and you want them talking about you, in a good way of course.

We are all fortunate to be here, in the early stages of steem, and have the chance to establish ourselves for the future. Spending 30 minutes a day reading some posts and commenting relevantly to the authors will pay far greater dividends than posting 20 poor-quality pictures of the tree at the bus stop in the hope someone upvotes for a 0.02 reward. Add in a decent post here and there and you're on your way!

We all have our ideas, likes and dislikes however in my humble opinion through engagement a user will gain a deeper experience here, build their brand more rapidly and develop lasting relationships; It's ok if you disagree, however if you do, and haven't tried engaging as above, give it a go daily for 30 days and take note of how your following grows. If you do it right I can almost guarantee you will gain more, and better, followers and you will earn more steem...Have more fun too.

Anyway, that's about it. If you get the chance to front up at a steem meet (face to face) My suggestion is to do it...You will probably not regret it...And there's nothing stopping you from organising your own so maybe get onto it and build your own meet up just like mattclarke@mattclarke and the #mallsballers have.

Want something to happen? Go do something!
