I never got picked first; A last-choice option on a middle-rate team I suppose you could say. I played my heart out when coach put me in though, full steam ahead all the way, and I still remember the catch I made that day, and how proud I was. I felt accepted, for just a moment, as they ran over and slapped me on the back. Good job man, well done they said, and in a moment I was anonymous again, that same last-choice option.
She had no choice but to ask me thanks to her boyfriend breaking her heart days earlier. I knew I was the last-option-guy but still said yes; It was that or go alone, and even as the last-option-guy, going to the prom with the queen sure beat going alone. I had some hopes of course, but no, I didn't get lucky that night, but I felt like a king anyway, and that was enough for me.
I didn't feel special at any time growing up, just average. I had hopes and dreams of course, but kept my feet on the ground, stayed humble and kind, smiled at the right time, laughed sometimes, and worked hard to be the best I could be.
It seems like a long time ago now, and it probably doesn't mean much to you, but it means a hell of a lot to me.
I'm the middle of a rough dusty road, not much to see either way and not much to look at. I'm here, just being me.
I'm an average man, perfectly flawed and broken; Completely imperfect but I'm ok, because I'm perfectly me. It's how life is, just a series of days all jumbled together, with me at the end of each hoping to make a difference to the next. I don't ask for much, and give much more, but I've always been that way.
I have a life to be proud of, with little regret, and loads of great memories. I'm able to look in the mirror and like what I see and whilst I've done bad things, I've done good ones too. I'm a hell of a husband, have a wife who loves me. I love my mother, respect my father and I'm a damned good brother. Just an average man, but I do those things well.
No, I'm nothing special, just a man who happily wears my heart on my sleeve...It probably doesn't mean much to you, but it means a hell of a lot to me.
END OF TEN MINUTES
I set my timer and wrote this body of text based around the word imperfect to see what came out. It was kind of cool fun I think. After the ten minutes, (I actually had 27 seconds left), I went back and fixed up typos and punctuation but what you see here is essentially my thoughts turned to words in under ten minutes.
Feel free to give it a go if you like. Do a post, tag me, and #tenminute-throwdown
