Cure sometimes, treat often, comfort always.

- Hippocrates -

Every so often I feel a hunger-craving for a particular type of food; it's not too uncommon. It happened on the weekend most recently. I was away from home on a business trip and my flight home was rescheduled to the following day, only three hours before it was due to depart. I was disappointed I wouldn't get home and needed some comforting, and that's where comfort food played it's hand.

My company re-checked me into the hotel and after getting settled back in I went hunting...for comfort food.

It didn't take long to find what I was looking for, although there were a few uncertain moments in which I had to decide between Mexican food, Portuguese and Indian. The Indian food won out and in I went to a rather dodgy looking Indian restaurant seeking the comfort I needed...and potentially food poisoning. I was happy to risk it though.

I knew I'd need a lot of comforting, and as I'd not had much for lunch I ordered a little more than I probably should have.

The samosas were the first to arrive and after a few dips in some kind of tasty sauce they provided, don't ask me what, they had soon given their lives up to sate my initial hunger. Feeling better, I sat back, sipped my beer and tried to work out what the fuck music was playing in the restaurant. It was, well...it was not good at all, although I suppose it's probably popular somewhere.

Just as I was thinking I'd eat the food scraps left over by the diners on the next table after they left, along came my main meal: Butter chicken, rice and a plain naan bread. It looked delicious, smelled delicious and looked delicious. I know, I said, looked delicious, twice - I wanted to have three descriptors so went with two the same. I'm ok with it.

Anyway, as I was saying, it looked delicious, smelled delicious and looked delicious.

I tore off some bread and dipped it into the sauce and...yep, my suspicions were confirmed; fucken tasty!

Just so you know, that test-dip is a thing for me with Indian food. I've done it for many years. So, once the sauce had passed the dip-test I was able to proceed with abandon. It was a great meal and for $32 (AUD), including the beer, I thought it was pretty damned good value. Not that I was paying though, the company pays for everything.

Of course, I'd ordered too much and felt way too full however on the short walk back to the hotel I did a quick evaluation and, sure enough, I felt quite comforted by my comfort food. Mission accomplished.

How about you folks, is there a food you turn to when you need some comforting? Is comfort food even a thing for you or do you look elsewhere to find some comfort when you need? I think we all have something that triggers a feel-good comfort-response and makes us feel a little better. What's yours?
